Another Chinese New Year is just around the corner and so are the traditions: Chinese New Year - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Gong Xi Fa Cai", the traditional Chinese New Year greeting.
But the Chinese don't stop at wishing for prosperity - they eat for it as well! 31 January 2014 marks the first day of the Year of the Horse.
This is the start of 15 days of eating and greeting, the period over which Chinese New Year is celebrated.
Air drying and curing various types of meats and homemade sausages outside homes, yards and restaurants is quite a common sight during the build-up to Chinese New Year.

Actually its not a bad time of the year to be around Shanghai and taking daily cruises with the mighty Jialing JH600 sidecar to the townships like Qibao.
Qibao is a town in Minhang District, Shanghai. Its formation can be traced back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, to the Northern Song Dynasty.
The name comes from the local temple, "Qibao Temple": Qibao - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Making popcorn from scratch can be tricky and here in China they do it the old fashion way….

Back to the Southern China tropical Island of Hainan for a few weeks.
For the annual Boao Forum they build a full on police checkpoint heading along towards the Yalong Bay area.....

The Boao Forum for Asia, abbreviated to BFA, is a non-profit organisation that hosts high-level forums for leaders from government, business and academia in Asia and other continents to share their vision on the most pressing issues in this dynamic region and the world at large. BFA is modeled after the World Economic Forum held annually in Davos, Switzerland. It has its fixed address in Bo'ao, Hainan, China, although the Secretariat is based in Beijing.
The Forum is committed to promoting regional economic integration and bringing Asian countries even closer to their development goals. Initiated in 1998 by Fidel V. Ramos, former President of the Philippines, Bob Hawke, former Prime Minister of Australia, and Morihiro Hosokawa, former Prime Minister of Japan, the Boao Forum for Asia was formally inaugurated in February 2001. The founding of the BFA was driven by the People's Republic of China and founded by 26 Asian and Australasian states on 27 February 2001. The organisation held its first meeting from April 12–13, 2002.
Discussions at the BFA focus on economics, integration, cooperation, society, and the environment. In the past the forum also addressed China's entry into the World Trade Organization, as well as Southeast Asia's economic crisis during the 1990s. The geopolitical strategy 'China's peaceful rise' was a topic of discussion for the forum in 2004. In addition to its annual meeting, the BFA also sponsors other forums and meetings related to Asian issues....

More massive developments, another water park under construction beside the highway from the Sanya airport out direction Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay....

Weird tree design for this particular real estate development called Sanya Beauty Crown Grand Tree Mansion.
The complex has China’s Lego hotel, the hotel resembles the famous toy bricks and boasts a record 6,668 hotel rooms in a so called seven star environment.....

Heading up to Haitang Bay from Sanya city area to check out more developments like new hotels and the new CDF Mall.
China Duty Free Mall scheduled for a opening during Summer 2014 after much delay and billed as the world's largest duty free mall.
According to the China Duty Free Group, the shopping mega mall will stock major international luxury brands and compete, price-wise, with duty-free shops in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Further up the coast, the Surfer Dudes at Riyue Bay (Wanning) have been busy as well with a lot of improvements done since my last visit.

The Riyue Bay Surf Club, located on tropical Hainan’s south east coast, is a must-visit for surfers and non surfers alike.
Conveniently located in China’s Surf Capital with a variety of breaks within walking distance, Riyue Bay is the perfect place for all surf levels...

From Riyue Wan (Wanning) going trail riding around the reservoirs and lakes up in the mountains and ending up near some "mining" equipment on the route back to Sanya...

Great pics TB, as it stands now I will visit a new customer in Lishui (Zhejiang province) in June.
It will be a 2 week trip and my second trip to the Zhejiang province.
I have been in Wengzhou once before, but that was more than 10 years ago.

You know my previous work was mainly in the Suzhou area, I have been there about 20 times.

As I work in a very industrial environment it will be less touristic but I am still very much looking forward to go back to China.

Lishui (Zhejiang province) in June.

Lishui is located in Southwest Zhejiang province and the juncture of Zhejiang--Fujian province and a bit to far for a single day return bike run.
In case you pass through Shanghai, feel free to get in touch ~ might be in town...

Another beautiful Hainan Island day, cruising up the mountain roads through the green forests...

Graves in the mountains and someone paying respect during the recent Tomb Sweeping Festival holidays.
The Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Day or Ching Ming, is a traditional Chinese festival on the first day of the fifth solar term of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar.
Qingming Festival (Tomb Sweeping Festival) is when Chinese people visit the graves or burial grounds of their ancestors.
Qingming Festival is an opportunity for celebrants to remember and honour their ancestors at grave sites.
Young and old pray before the ancestors, sweep the tombs and offer food, tea, wine, chopsticks, joss paper accessories, and/or libations to the ancestors.

A very common sight all over Hainan = vegetable and fruit harvesting / trading...

Up the National Road #314 / Hainan Island in South China for some exploring around the central highlands...

Well - good time for chain lubing and maintenance while the bike is over on the ground due to a soft spot just before the water crossings and more trail riding...

The trail ride finished in Wuzhishan in the mountains (approx. 80k from Sanya / Hainan Island). Wuzhishan is a county-level city in the south-central part of Hainan Island.
It was originally called Tōngshí and is located beside Wuzhi Shan, the mountain.

Had no idea Hainan had so much interior and was as diverse.. Been meaning to get there for the last few years.

well ~ how to put it in words ~ stay where you are, better riding.
yes, I cruise a lot all over Hainan Island but in my case its combining business with pleasure and would not go to Hainan Island so often but need to follow up on business projects frequently.

Can almost smell the place, you capture it so well Butch. Im always super careful what meat products I eat there (rarely eat "red" meat)

Hainan Island cruising time coming to an end again and as always saying farewell to the bike at a shrine and temple till the next time...

...Hainan Island riding shall continue later on in 2014....

Added a bit of colour (custom airbrush) to the MTS and enjoyed a nice spring run to Zhouzhuang and Diashan Lake area (Jiangsu) just before the May national holidays (4 days holidays and the massive tourist holiday crowds will be out and about as toll free travel on the expressways)....

Quick overnight ride from Shanghai to Nanjing (Jiangsu) for meetings and dinner with mates, great spring weather in early May 2014.

The Sheraton Huzhou at Taihu Lake: http://www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=3414

As usual, a few temples long the route (National Highways G318 / G104) from Shanghai to Huzhou and onwards to Nanjing around Taihu Lake.

Stopover just up from the National Highway G104 between Huzhou and Nanjing to check out the New Fourth Army Memorial Hall
Full name "New Fourth Army National Revolutionary Army military memorial reconstruction", is located in the east of Jianjun Road, Yancheng, Jiangsu, China.

During my recent Shanghai - Nanjing ride (May 2014) the Desmo service light (24000k) showed and took the MTS for a full service to the Ducati Shanghai service.
The MTS fells like a new bike again with the full Desmo service (belts, shims, etc.) and some extra preventive maintenance and service completed, changed the gearing to 15/42 and really lovin' it.
DUC-MTS ready for some fun rollin' and serious ADV cruising around Mainland China once again....

C'mon Phil, where's the sense of adventure LOL?
Nothing beats a well aged goat leg marinated in milk and hot peppers and BBQed to perfection...my mouth waters when I see this...

Jialing sidecar maintenance service was due and had Shanghai's trusty Jialing service (Xiao Fan) change the engine oil, oil filter, cushion drive rubbers, brake pads (rear).
The JL JH600B beast runs good as new....

Took the Jialing JH600 sidecar for a nice loop through Qingpu district to check everything is fine after the service.
Ever wonder about the confiscated motorbike impound lot location, we have a few but a large one is just on HuQingPing Highway (National Road 318) underneath the G1501 Expressway in Qingpu district of Shanghai.

4500 Huqingping Highway, Qingpu, Shanghai

Would love to go there

Jialing / Chang-Jiang Shanghai Service (Xiao Fan = Fan Peisheng) is located in the vehicle repair centre at roughly 665 Hangzhong Road (street alley near Huqingping Highway / G318 National Road).
The place is hard to find the first time to be honest as in a dead end alleyway and hidden behind a large great steel door.

I love the tools the guy uses for the service, nothing fancy and no torque wrench :lol3
From August to October I will be in Holland and I think I will be back in China before the end of this year, will keep in touch to discuss how plans develop!

I love the tools the guy uses for the service, nothing fancy and no torque wrench.

Its a Jialing, no complicated special tools needed and no service light to reset.....
Xiao Fan does good honest work and has been around with his bike shop for 20+ years in three different locations. Doesn't sell Jialing bikes but my "go to" mechanic anything Jialing related in Shanghai.

**************************************************

Lunch meeting over in Suzhou / Jiangsu (Jinji Lake - Suzhou Singapore Industrial Park) and took the MTS for a run over.
Time of the year again for farmers to sell watermelons and they looked pretty good to the eye ~ not like the ones sold of trucks injected with dyed red sugar water to add weight and enhance the sweetness.....

Shows how much I really love my Ducati Multistrada 1200S Pikes Peak, brilliant Italian bike.....

Heading out of Shanghai to Zhejiang province for the first August weekend taking the longer Suzhou - Wuxi - Huzhou (Taihu Lake) route to the Moganshan / Anji mountain area....

Stopping over at temple near Yixing Yixing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia at the mountain ranges near Taihu Lake in Jiangsu province.

Wet n' Wild in the Moganshan area in Zhejiang province during Tropical Storm Nakri, keeps the dust down and the Mosquitos away....
Moganshan ~ my favourite biking area for a quick weekend get-away = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moganshan

Checking out sections of the Land Rover Experience Moganshan http://www.landroverexperience.com.cn
The heavy Jialing sidecar is not doing well on the step sections and had to give up on the water crossing as the sidecar will just float up on one side.

Well - time came around again to head up to the northern part of Mainland China. The wooden transport pallet got modified a bit and makes bike shipment even easier using CargoBuckles to hold the front wheel in place, for the rear the trusty Pitbull Trailer Restraint mounted as usual. All the riding equipment, spare parts, tyres and tools got shipped from Shanghai to Beijing on the truck with the bike as the Shanghai - Beijing ride is rather dull and boring and did that stretch too many times in the past. Really looking forward to get out again riding into the Northern dusty deserts, mountain ranges and grasslands of China and got a few runs planned and mapped out.

Every corner tells a different story, there's nothing like the exhilaration of a relaxed bike ride, whether it's up the mountains, into the grasslands or even down some dirty trails ~ lets rock n' roll around Northern China....

Afternoon ride out to the Great Wall. . Mutianyu is a section of the Great Wall of China located in Huairou County 70km north-east of central Beijing. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is connected with Jiankou in the west and Lianhuachi in the east. As one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall, the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs. The Chinese Aviation Museum (located 40km North of central Beijing), is also sometimes referred to as Datangshan due to its location adjacent to the mountain of the same name. The museum was first opened to the public on 11 November 1989, to celebrate the 40th. Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Liberation Army Air Force.
Part of the museum is located inside a cave in the side of Datangshan Mountain. The cavern was originally part of the tunnels and underground bunker system of Shahe Airbase, and is 586 metres long by 11 metres high by 40 metres wide. The road leading to the museum is actually also used as a taxiway between the base and bunker system.

I know so many people that would love that aviation museum, ive forwarded this to them, thank you Butch.

I know so many people that would love that aviation museum.....

My pics only show a fraction of the planes on display, easy to spent a day or two looking at all the planes, well ~ not a real airplane / aviation enthusiast. Entrance to the open air displays is free, entrance to the hangar in the mountain is 20 RMB.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Aviation_Museum and http://www.chn-am.com (official website always out of service).

The museum is deserted, only a few Chinese seniors hanging about as they have free entrance to most museums in China.

A lovely day out around Beijing, taking my pedal powered two wheeled mode of transportation as the motorbike friendly Beijing Municipality Traffic Management Bureau http://www.bjjtgl.gov.cn launched a new campaign and enforces restrictions to use motorbikes within the 6th. ring-road of Capital City Beijing once again.
TIC = This Is China and just to complicated to explain the new restrictions in full details (fines and penalty points on driving license), enjoy the pictures as they come and the new rules and regulations not going to ruin my days in Capital City thats for sure... Very easy and convenient to get around Beijing by bicycle ~ through the small back alleyways, great ADVriding in a different way.....

Neighbourhood not far from Tianamen Square and Forbidden City. Liulichang is a famous district in down-town Beijing that is known for a series of traditional Chinese stone dwellings housing selling various craftwork, artistry, and antiques. It is one of Beijing's traditional old quarters…..

Next Beijing Day Out by bicycle stop = Temple of Heaven, literally the Altar of Heaven is a complex of religious buildings situated in the southeastern part of central Beijing. The complex was visited by theEmperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for good harvest. It has been regarded as a Daoist temple, although Chinese heaven worship, especially by the reigning monarch of the day, predates Daoism.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_of_Heaven

Just down the road from the Lama Temple is the The Temple of Confucius, my last stop during the Beijing Day Out by bicycle.
The temple is the second largest Confucian Temple in China, after the one in Confucius' hometown of Qufu.

Enough touristy spots and culture, finishing off the Beijing by bicycle day out at Home Plate BBQ Beijing = http://homeplatebbq.com and decided to get some serious riding done soon away from the hustle and bustle and motorcycle restrictions…..
