On my recent work related trip I had two free days before I had to be in Champhone district for some more work and instead of driving straight to Savannakhet I decided to have some fun in the area east of Thakheak and Savannakhet.

2Daytrip.jpg

Map showing the trip done during the 2 days. There were numerous rivers to cross and while most had bridges, other were just dry riverbed crossings while a few required me to get my feet wet.

Bridge over the Huay Khachanh on the way from Rd 12 to Boualapha district:

The same bridge seen from the river bed.

Crossing the Xe-Noy river on my way to the Sepon mine in Vilaboury district where part of the crossing was through the river and the deeper part on a temporary "toll" bridge:

The old guy who manned the "toll" asked with a big smile for 50000 Kip which I found quite steep but then again, I was there for fun so did not mind for him to have a good day.

A few of the other river crossings I did on this trip are shown here: loation-dreams-t1134.html

Frank on his KTM690 making short work of a river crossing in Laos near Thasi. Coming the other way we tried the bridge, but it was made of fragile bamboo matting and once we saw a truck cross decided the water was the least dangerous and best chance of getting across.

Here are a few of the water crossings Harri, Justin, Frank and myself encountered on our trip in Laos.

Looks a little deep.

It was deep...and rocky too. Justin found out the hard way and submerged his 525.

Frank to the rescue. Never missing a chance to grab a smoke.

Water was almost too deep for the iron buffalo.

Frank and Justin coming ashore after helping the tank over the large boulders in this crossing. Just played this one safe and took the boat to stay dry. Needless to say he found out later that he drowned his replacement phone too.

Great pictures Jim! I heard Just fully immersed the KTM 525?

P2020182.jpg

"Fully" is an understatement. He was checking the depth of the river using his handle bars. :lol3 Every time he tried to pick it up it went under deeper.

I was behind him and had to stop. Tried to help but the current was pushing the bike down stream. After Frank was able to come and rescue the 525 Justin lent me a hand to get rolling again. Later he said I was about 8" from going over the edge. :eek1 Did not even see that.

Awesome Photo

Great photos and cant wait to read more on your adventure. Spoke with big Frank last night and he says he had a wonderful time. He has 70Gb of helmet cam video to edit....good luck with that! Great to see Harry soldiering on as usual. Might be better for Justin to take up Scuba Diving..

The Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge
Bridge construction began on March 21, 2004
