Went there yesterday evening for dinner and found it quite busy and the only place to sit was in the coffee shop next door (they do have an agreement for this with the coffee shop with the latter supplying the drinks) so better make an appointment. Excellent food - had Lamb chops which were well worth the 429 Baht. Fast and efficient service and the staff seemed to be happy doing their job.

They do have an arrangement with the "House of Whine - Mae Rim" (not sure if this is a branch of the "House of Wine" in Chiangmai) and they did have some nice wines. The House of Wine, which is located some 15 meters from the restaurant, did serve all the wine in the restaurant but I am not sure if this is a permanent set-up.

Phil posted the location but if you are coming from Chiangmai, you can also take a left turn at the traffic light in Mae Rim (opposite the market, head in that road for about 20-30 meter and turn right at the signs for Mae Rim Plaza (signs are in Thai) and you will find the restaurant on your right hand side.

Auf Der Au Bistro

German restaurant

This was highly recommended to me today by someone who really enjoys food, said the food was spectacular, will try it for sure.

Last night Arthur and I ate at a German restaurant on south 106. This place has to be the best restaurant in Chaing Mai. They have a buffet on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights for 220 Baht. EVERYTHING that this guy put out on the buffet was perfect. You have got to try this place. He seams to specialize in German sausages. His bakery goods like pies and cakes were also fantastic!

The lat/long is: 18.72602, 99.02463

This small sign out front says the name is:Auf Der Au Bistro

The owner is a F1 fan and usually has a few in there races days as well as the buffet.

The sign is quite small but you can't miss the German Flag hanging in front of the restaurant. The food is quite nice, generous portions and cheap for what you get but I would not call it spectacular.

I was really interested when that got announced.. BKK style sports bar in CNX.. Place to go early morning for live HD UFC bouts.. Etc etc..

Its opening party (with imported bangkok celebs) I was on a Patts mission, so missed.. Since then I have heard nothing but negatives.. Mediocre at best food, at prices that simply dont fit to CNX (I have noticed they admitted this and said they would be adjusting it all for the local market on FB)... A way out of town location 90% of people wont bother to get to (actually ok for me).. High quality yank style pool tables, but set too close to the wall so hard to use.. Etc etc etc...

The amount of customers you see inside in the pics says exactly what I had heard.. Its not like they havent put a fair bit of money into it..

I'm told Damon, the big chap with the pony tail who had a falling out with the other partners at Loco Elvis is running it. He has experience of running relaxation centers at Iraq military bases so might be able to jump start it.

Case in point.. My facebook feed just threw this at me..

1908416_1523092041258904_6972586633434127082_n.jpg

But lets be honest.. Cheap charlies are not going to help this place.. Gecko garden does a huge hotdog and fries for 69 or 89 baht..

And really.. This is supposed to be a deal ?? A 'big breakfast special' ??

10469740_1517681268466648_1815233840744420802_n.jpg

Couple of strips of Thai bacon and some eggs ?? WOW, I am impressed !!!

Or I could go to Sausage king and get.. For 99 baht.. With coffee and home made bread toast..

10628282_732834153441346_4005300812078821300_n.jpg

Or a 'Big Boy' for 139 baht..

10418915_728582300533198_156423957452605326_n.jpg

If they are trying to get customers out all that way based on cheap ?? I think they are going to have a very hard road..

Much more is getting groups.. Sunday BBQ's.. Sports events.. Crowds for a reason who will buy 240b hoegarden.. The Posh beer places in namanheamin are packed and people spending 200 - 300b a beer.. Fighting to get the Gecko garden trade ??

At least it will make a good location for a Sausage king franchise afterwards :RE

Very strange that they didn't choose a location in town, where it might have worked. It's got the feeling of the Duke s guy involved, Damon & Dave are buddies which adds to that theory.

Agreed.. In town its reasonable(ish) proposition.. Even out on ring roads and 'edge' of town.. Way out in Hang Dong.. Much less so..

And not like they skimped on fitting it out either..

I am / was rooting for it.. Its out on the side of the city I mostly am, and theres a lack of good western centric bar and food there.. But not that many others like me I think. Plus so far the launch and food options have had universally negative reviews. CNX is price conscious much more than BKK, yet fighting only a price war is destructive too..

But what the hell do I know.. Not my business..

Saw that the other day and wish I eat there after a not so special steak of the day experience..

Simple, cheap, Vietnamese food..

Spotted this recently and felt like something light so went to give it a try.. Only a simple shophouse setup and out of town so didnt know how it would fare.

Really quite decent !! Its a small menu, some appetizers, some pho's, some 'meat and rice' offerings, and a couple of specials.. But everything we had was really tasty with that great fresh herby, crunchy, combo that Vietnamese food often has. It tasted authentic and not a 'sort of like' type attempt..

When we got there there was 2 family groups (Korean and American Vietnamese) and they still were not overwhelmed and dishes came out in fast order.

We ended up ordering too much.. The appetizers of spring rolls were larger than expected (80 - 100b a piece).

IMG_20141005_114841.jpg

The usual included salad / fresh herbs

IMG_20141005_114123.jpg

The best Bang Cheo I have had in ages (bit different to the Khmer made ones I used to have a lot of). Kind of crunchy and crispier than I remember.

IMG-20141005-WA0001.jpg

and a couple of huge bowls of Pho.. So large I couldnt get through it all

IMG_20141005_115820.jpg

The average dish was 80 - 100b with beef specials maybe 120.. The table full we had with 3x ice teas (but not that great vietnamese green tea, missing a trick there as easy and cheap to do here) was 520 for 2 people to be groaningly full.

The owner is a Vietnamese guy married to a Thai lady, nice and friendly without being overbearing.. They havent been open long, and said 70% of the custom is non Thais but I suspect he means asian non Thais for a lot of it.

Its the kind of place thats out of the way, so will only survive by word of mouth, which is partly why I post it. Its out close to me and I will certainly be back tho the menu seems a bit small for too many regular visits.

I am partial to a good Baan Mie sandwich and if facebook is to be believed this kind of offering close to my house will get couple of times a week quick snack visit.

Sure makes subway look weak !!

Dont expect fancy, but it was fresh, tasty, healthy quality food.. If your out on the SE side, worth dropping in.

I know what you mean when you want something light but tasty. Vietnamse fits the bill. Those spring rolls with the prawns look the dog's!

Accidental discovery.. Middle Ring Rd, just past the Payap entrance.

I had seen pictures posted by a contact on facebook for laos cuisine place.. But was baffled as it looked like this huge building by a lake, yet was out on the ring Rd near Payap so I couldnt place it.. Worked out it was in the V community plaza and thats not far, so feeling like sampling Laos, and some salady type wraps went there with the missus. We get there, plenty parking, huge huge building etc.. Wander in upstairs.. Its obviously a new place, built to look old style, wood, those colored glass windows, staff dressed in traditional gear, all great.. But probably set up for large groups (maybe hoping for tour busses its that large) and multiple specials like morning buffet (khanom jean and geangs) 89b etc etc..

I didnt take any pics or a camera so these are just low quality snaps out of my missus phone..

IMG-20141122-WA0000.jpg

IMG-20141122-WA0005.jpg

IMG-20141122-WA0006.jpg

Its nice simple decor and style, indoor and outdoor.. But large place for big groups which is sorta odd considering it way out on the middle ring rd..

1016573_781415751920099_2720810545001362399_n.jpg

We get the menu, both hungry, ordered up and I am thinking 'this doesnt look so much like Laos food, this is northern Thai'.. Somtams, geangs, phak and nahm prik, fish mains, etc etc.. Not a huge menu but loads of it looking appealing. Food came out fast along with some delicious drinks (lemongrass / water and coconut water) and I have to say, this was all delicious. Perfectly done, very high quality, exactly hit the nail on the head for northern Thai food.

Somtam salt egg, already half attacked before she remembered the camera.

IMG-20141122-WA0001.jpg

Sai uah.. Northern Sausage.. Spicy, chunky, just right texture.

IMG-20141122-WA0009.jpg

IMG-20141122-WA0002.jpg

Fried Tabtim (nile perch ??) with Nam Dtock sauce.. Meat filleted from the bones so easy chunks to eat..

IMG-20141122-WA0004.jpg

Plus unpictured sticky 'black' rice (with I think peanuts in it.. Really good) and multiple steamed white rice. The whole number with drinks everything was IIRC low 400b.

Its fairly normal simple northern Thai here, so easy to discount the details and think its just like many other places, but the little touches, drinks were superb, all the flavors just right, the servings of khao suay white rice has a sprinkle of poppy seeds or other little garnish to the center, it was just excellently done, every dish was exactly at it best. Plus it was great value and a decent setting. Theres a picture wall and on inspection its covered in Thai celebrity and stars, including royals, so as this place cant have been open long I am guessing this is another branch of an established local known place ??

So after the food has arrived, and my mind is ticking I start thinking, well this is northern Thai, why is this a Laos restaurant ?? I ask for the menu back and I check and theres no Laos spring rolls, in fact I was sure my buddys FB update has salmon something and theres none on the menu, in fact theres nothing Laos about the menu at all, its pure traditional northern thai. Its only as we walk out, and this is on my mind, I realize the giant wooden building we are in, is divided into 2 wings by a walkway entrance, and one side is the Laos place and the other is the place we eat.. Possibly joint owned but who knows. So I didnt eat at the right restaurant even !!! Ohh how we laughed !! Now I have to go back, try the Laos food, and decide if we have a favorite. Try a review for that after.. This is where I was trying to get to.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/ตำแซบ-พันนัว/547605351967808

Dead handy for me as close to home and my side of the city, top quality food at bargain basement pricing.

That looks like a great find, will try for sure

It was just really good.. The menu is what you would see in many places around the city, but the execution was superb. I guess thats why the wall is covered in celebs, the princess, etc etc etc.. I dont believe this has sprung from nowhere in the last year, its too well executed for that, but searching shows no other location with the same name.
