Chiang Mai restaurants

Aroon Rai - North Thai / Chiang Mai Cuisine

This place has been around since 1957, they do a fantastic, lean pork, north Thailand style curry for 65 bht. Portions are a bit small, but very tasty.

Success has gone to their heads due to massive "over promotion" in the guide books.

Used to be better when the old lady ran the joint, now i believe her son runs the show. Always full of tourists and never many locals has been my observation, Lonely Planet strikes again.

I wouldn't recommend it.

72 Baht for this large portion of Northern Thai pork curry with ginger

I found this dish to be a lot more appetising at this restaurant then at Aroon Rai

David & Apple - New restaurant in Chiang Mai

One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. From Canada, on a RTW trip last year on a BMW 1200gs, got to Chiang Mai (stayed with us) & then fell in love.

They've just opened a restaurant in Chiang Mai, David sent me this:

"You can find us at N18 46.639 E98 59.678. Rangang soi 3, just off of Rangang and Kamphaeng Din roads. It's a 2 story white house with a red roof and a large metal awning out front and another on the side. It's right on the corner and just looks like a normal little Thai store with a walled yard. Attached is a map with us as the red star.

Hope to see you again tonight!

David & Apple"

Hi Everyone,

I'm David from David & Apples place that Phillip posted about. I hope I'm not advertising or anything (I promise this will be the only 'plug' I make), but since there was a question about the food I hope you won't mind.

Right now we serve Thai and Isan food, but expect to add a small number of simple farrang dishes soon. Our prices are typical cheap Thai- large bottle of Leo in the restaurant is 55bht, pork Khao phat is 30bht, Sundays is Thai-Suki/Chim Chum starting at 79bht, and hopefully starting next week Saturdays will be Mogata (sp?) starting at 99bht. We are open from 8am-midnight or later Tuesday-Sunday, food is available from 11am-10pm.

All the best, and keep the rubber side down!

Oops- forgot to mention- if you bring your bike, we have off-street parking for a few if you need it!

You open at 8am but no food until 11am, whats available during these three hours? no early breakfast available by the sound of it

Are there any one of those restaurants built on a small lake with separate stilt huts per table (a bit like this)?
I love those places, just sit there with a few friends and a bottle of Red on a lazy afternoon, relax, feed the fish sometimes.

Yes, one that I frequent is at any of the many restaurants beside the lake at the Tribal Museum, Chiang Mai.
Sorry, no GPS co-ords yet.

Last time I was there there were about 20 restaurants around the lake, some open during the day and to watch the sunset over the lake.
At night it comes to life!

The Tribal Museum is worth a visit too.

^ pic of the museum on the site you posted was taken from where the green arrow is on the google map i posted.

Half a chicken Tandoori, garlic naan, onions and salad.
It was delicious and 180 Baht

The Tandoori at the Rajdarbar was awesome but I have not tried their curries.

The curries at the Hinlay are okay but probably not as good as at a proper Indian restaurant

Sausage King - San Sai

Might be easier to find Lord Luken than Sausage King without a GPS. Located at co-ords:

N 18.8327809790925

E 99.01948251975843

Nice location (once you've found it at the end of a Soi), initially feels like you're entering someones back yard/ garden, but once inside very well laid out.

I think this is the Englishman who bakes on premises and supplies many of the local supermarkets etc with his produce?
Good stuff too!
Can buy them (pies, snags etc) frozen or fresh. :p

Sausage King: try their Indian Burgers..... bloody lovely! They've also just started doing a very neat pad krapow sausage (your fave Thai quick food..... with chips!!), and they do traditional sai oua...... with meat!! :D
The chicken tikka masala pies are pretty damn good too!
