Lifestraw Family and even shit is not an issue: Cow Sh*t to Clean Water - YouTube
Price is less then US $ 20! It kills 99.9999% of the Bacteria, 99.99% of the Viruses and 99.9% of the Protozoaan Parasites.
The Lifestraw itself is smaller and does not take out the Viruses.

got to way up cost against use. if moneys no object then the katadyn ceramic style with the lifetime guarantee is a no brainer. for a one off survival , emergency situation one if the straws or something in between. mine is about the size of one of those modern flourescent lightbulbs, so takes up little room, so no point leaving it behind

This one even better but also bigger and more expensive:Bottle Technical Info
Problem with the Katayne is similar to the Lifestraw personal, it does not kill the viruses, that is why them tablets are handy.

I carried a Steripen on my trip through Asia and added an MSR filter from the archery shop in Chiang Mai. I made one mistake... drank from a stream in Southern Laos without using either... I was exhausted, dehydrated and in those circumstances, one doesn't always make the sanest decisions. Shat through the eye of a needle for a few days. Won't pack the gear so far down in my pack next time. Some items should always be easily accessible to reduce temptation to not use them.

I took this photo around the time I had the drink of untreated water. Do I look exhausted?
