Omkoi - R 105 link-up, finally completed

Absolutely knackered, hungry, thirsty, filthy & aching, the Good View GH in Mae Sariang was an oasis in the desert, i've never slept so well. 500 bht low season, one of the best deals in Thailand for a fancy room.

Philip! Fancy dumping that filthy bag on those nice clean sheets!!!

Good ride report - will have to get out that way sometime.

The countryside looks so good this time of year, compensation for the slippery conditions I suppose.

Did the trip involve carting the bikes to a specific starting point for the offroad, or is it within reasonable riding distance from CM ?

Bill, in the dry season, you could be on trails SW in that direction 30km from Chiang Mai, but the initial trail is "death valley", not do-able in the wet season. This means we need to go a little further SW to pick up the first trails, probably around 50km ish.

looks great phil,
hope i can do that one soon. one more week in vienna though. cu

Nice to see you back in the saddle and making it further than the car park this time :LOL

Nice adventure guys!

Haha thanks Loop. I actually got a whole 137 meters from the car park before binning it last time.

Well done guys. Reminds me a bit of the slippery stuff on the Elephant Trail, further north. The green moss on that orange clay claimed us a total of three times...

Justin... which bike did you take?

KTM 500 and it worked a charm. Enjoying the bike so far. I was initially worried with the much lighter flywheel on the 500 versus the 525 I would be spinning up too easily in the slick clay. Luckily I could ride it with the RPM's in the basement (though not as low as the 525 chugs) and it would hook up...or try to hook up without killing me.

Yep,i saw your hole....not a pretty site and still within sight of the car.

Looking forward to getting out and riding again. he KDX doesn`t like mud so it`ll will be a couple of months i guess :RE

Before this trip, I must admit that I'd convinced myself that there was no such thing as the "do everything" bike off-road. This was a particularly nasty trail west of Omkoi, made exponentially worse by riding in the SW monsoon & I was shocked how well the KTM 500 EXC handled everything, I will be ordering one, probably from Cambodia.

Jeez, you won't have time to ride anymore as you will be busy riding your collection of bikes with foreign plates to the border every six months

Many thanks for great report and wonderful photo! I'm Thai Native and never seen these before ! WoW!

On a recent trip stayed at Mae Sariang and got talking to a German who's wife was running the Sawadee bar.

He was a keen dirt rider so i found and showed him this thread.
Said that the missing link was his usual starting point and that there were other trails through that part.

He might be someone worth hooking up with anyone wants to ride out there.
