Steve Mercer, who I rode with in south Laos last year, this was his latest trip, 2 stroke Eric was along too, read on:
The Westrac ride last week well most were ex westrac guys mid 20s
I got a call from one of the local guides Wednesday night and he had a
group of 14 guys coming up for three days and his off sider pulled out
with no notice. Picked up all the bikes next afternoon and then picked
up the guys at the airport mmmmmm small bags???????
The guide was told they could all ride well and proudly presented them with a new
pair of gloves and goggles. Back to the shop to pick up the rest of
the bikes and I asked about lids, mmmmm good question
They were up for a bucks do no gear, no helmets no nothing. They had
partied in Bangkok till 4 am, one guy had never been on a bike in the
27 years of his life and others had ridden on the farm a decade or so
ago, ooo bring it on. Found out next day most could ride OK though
Raced around town and got what gear we could and a lid for everyones
head that evening
7 am start yer yer can see that happening. 0645 at the hotel and all
ready to go( after some of them drinking till 0300) Couldn't believe
it out of there at 7 and rode into a thunder storm on track where
thunder storms make it a bit tricky.
I told the guide it was a big ride as he hadnt done it for years and because another guy and I had
done it in 8 hrs 3 weeks before he reckon sheel be right. This guy had
ridden 3 Paris Dakars and I was racing him sort of he he he. 2 bikes no
lunch no flat tyres, just flat out 60k moving average 53k trip
average,mmmmmmm
17 bike,s lunch, beer, falling off, falling off and falling off got us
into Vieng Viang at 3 next morning he he eh
If it was any other group other than tuff miners from Aus I reckon we
would have had riot. Hard core bunch, cant say I heard any whinging
even when we were basically out of fuel 40ks out at 2 in the morning
with no fuel stations open.
Easy day home with about 7 hours riding and a boat ride
All good every one made it back ( three in the ute) with only 1
broken rib 1 busted ankle 1 busted shoulder 3 busted bikes
They reckon they will be back for a reunion next year, cant wait will
be a longer trip with the gear on
Steve
PS They guy in the dress and pink scarf/hotpants was the groom and rode well
