Well that was a bit of a shake.. Thrown the top 4 inches of water out of my pool.. Shook stuff off the shelves.

5.8 apparently.. 35km SW of Chiang Rai..

I was outside walking when it hit, didnt feel that big (5.8) Starting to hear of others homes being damaged here in CR though. Couple of smaller aftershocks already now. Grew up in California so smaller earthquakes not a big deal to me

^ the new race track?

Oh that's a pity with all the work they've done there.
Must have been close to the epicentre.

Still getting some quite wobbly aftershocks in CR... Little rumbles coming often still.

^ hopefully no more to come.

Been a few on the "Ring of Fire" around Taiwan and Japan today.

Yeah there was a 6 over near japan, which I think is on the 'other edge' of the plate we are on.. So could have either increased or reduced tectonic pressure leading to our shake..

Blimey, that's some serious road damage!

GF's parents house is near raceway in Maelao hwy 118 & 1.
The restuarant is all made of wood and is fine.
The house not so much

Wauw KMA, I hope no-one was hurt?

We are alright in Thoeng, just a little shake. It felt less then the Mae Sai earthquake 3 years ago which was a 4.1!

I hope the photo Phil posted that he wasn't sure of the location was the Philippines on a previous Earthquake

That support beam needs proper intelligent structural repair, not Thai style patching and forget about it behind an inch or two of plaster..

I am sure you know this..

Just had another , this felt much worse than yesterday out our way

2 solid after shocks just now

Yeah there were many aftershocks here last night but this mornings were pretty big. This is getting annoying!!

Three after-shocks in Doi Saket from around 6am this morning.

More than 100 aftershocks have been detected in the wake of the earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale that struck Chiang Rai's Phan district on Monday night.

(Bangkok Post)

Damn...we just seen it on the news so I logged in to see if anyone knew more, hope everyone is ok up there. We didn't feel a thing...sitting here boozing it up since we postponed our departure for Cambodia. Well, we did leave the other morning but got turned around (not sure what could have warranted an "undesirable" mark to someone but one fella couldn't cross so we decided to head towards the Emerald Triangle along the border.

I Kantaralack the same idiot started fighting with everyone instead of appreciating what they all gave up. When he started kicking the bikes and punched my best buddy I decided it was time to come home. Once here I took the bike from him and put him on the next bus to BKK...don't need idiots around here.

The nasty rain storm we had this morning kind of changed people's minds so the BBQ is lit, a 15Kg piglet's roasting and we're all in the pool gettin' plastered. We'll be leavin tomorrow I guess...so this afternoon we'll be heading into town since so many want to check out the Ladyboys here...some are in fact a lot more beautiful then what hangs around in BKK. Cheers and hope you're all ok up there...

So after the 4.0 aftershock this morning the house (3 stories) dropped further, its over for this place. Luckily we filled the lot behind & next to the restaurant. Plenty of space to rebuild if they choose to

Sorry to hear that.. Guessing Thai insurance is not going to cover acts of God huh ??

With the picture of that support column before I was wondering..

Just make sure when building new this time that you get a real "chang" to lay in posts and foundations that will hold the structure properly...from the looks of what you posted someone didn't dimension things properly and most likely missed a few bags of cement in the mix as well.

Good luck with the new build

Thai insurance WILL cover earthquake damage.

I have a Home Care policy with ThaiSri Insurance. It cost 2100 baht per year for 1.5 million in coverage. Earthquake damage is specifically listed as covered.

It helped me out a few years ago, when an earthquake up near the Burma border caused an underground water line to break. The line was under the house slab, and the entire house had to be repiped - about 20k baht.

Now - I did get paid for all the repairs, but it took some major discussions with their Bangkok office. They tried several dodges to avoid paying.

1. They claimed that there were no earthquakes IN Chiang Mai, so they were not responsible. They even sent data sheets from the Thai Seismological Department "proving" this.

2. They said that they did not believe that all the material I purchased was for the repairs, but out of the goodness of their heart they would pay me 45% back..

I had many conversations with the woman who was head of claims, and kept getting told the same nonsense that her claims people were telling her. I finally sent her links to Reuters and the Bangkok Post for the stories about the earthquake near Burma caused buildings in Chiang Mai and Bangkok to sway, then demanded to speak directly to the claims adjuster that was calling me a thief. They decided to pay up in full.

BTW - the same policy covers equipment as well - so I got paid when a well pump failed.
