Not often a huge new suspension bridge that pops up so close to the city of Chiang Mai. Some discussions with Lone Rider & he discovered where it was and went to visit it.

LR's photo below. It has become a major tourist attraction for the Thai's

Thanks but the credit should go to you as you provided the picture which gave me a hint where I should look for it.

A few more pictures of the bridge and tourists visiting it - quite a few people but that might be because of the long weekend:

A quick look at the waterfall (sticky waterfall Chiang Mai)

The whole waterfall area is under construction. Looks like the won't be a free waterfall for much longer

We've been exploring (by bicycle) both sides of the bridge for months, waiting for them to finish. I had no idea that the rest of the world found out about it. Thanks for the info about why the "Bridge to Nowhere" exists. I wish I had known about the road works to Sticky Falls sooner, before I went last week.

Auke did some more research:

"Did some more searching and what you see in this picture seems to be part of the Mae Kuang to Mae Ngat irrigation diversion project - boring a 25.4 km. long tunnel with a diameter of 4 meter to channel water from one reservoir to another reservoir - a 5 year project according to Chiangmai Citylife Chiang Mai "

Not sure what is happening at the site of the Mae Kuang suspension bridge but they are working on a second bridge right next to the bridge which was finished a few months ago. The new bridge, just like the other new bridge, will be 3 meters wide and 166 meters long. I talked with one of the locals who lives nearby and he indicated the bridges would be open for small cars once both are finished. Just some pictures of the bridge under construction:

Quite some time ago I managed to get to the top of the hill located in between the two dams of the Mae Kuang Reservoir - not easy as the track up was overgrown. At the top there were some buildings which might have been living quarters or offices but which at that time had been abandoned. This time no luck to go there as the access road has been blocked by gates with big padlocks - so just a few pictures of my previous visit some 10 years ago

The gate was locked just west of the restaurant in the Mae Kuang reservoir

The track was quite a bit overgrown

Tremendous views from up there

Abandoned buildings on the top
