" A total of 33 people were killed and 322 injured in road accidents nationwide on Dec 27, the first day of the so-called “seven dangerous days", Transport Minister Chatchart Suthipan said on Friday.
The “Seven Dangerous Days” road safety campaign during the New Year holiday runs from Dec 27 to Jan 2, 2013.
The province with the most fatalities on day one was Chiang Mai, with 4 deaths, followed by Bangkok (3).

Drunk driving was the main cause of accidents, Mr Chatchart said. "

I know this is a well-travelled topic but may be time for a reminder to all that extra care would be appropriate during these so called
"Seven Dangerous Days"; not that the remaining 358 aren't ! ;)

Day 2

" A total of 38 people were killed and 504 injured in 495 road accidents nationwide on Friday, Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, director general of the Probation Department, reported on Saturday.
The road death toll was reported at 33 on Thursday, the first day of the so-called "seven dangerous days" road safety campaign over the New Year holidays, which runs from Dec 27 to next Wednesday.
Road accident death toll over the first two days of the dangerous period rose to 71, with total injuries rising to 826, according to the director general.
Provinces with most fatalities were Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Chonburi, with 4 deaths each. Of the total Friday's accidents, 32.88% were caused by drunk driving and 20.52% by speeding, said Ms Ruenvadee. "

As usual alcohol is the main cause of the carnage

Day 3 (what a killer!)

Seventy-seven people were killed and 536 injured in road accidents throughout the country on Dec 29, adding up the New Year tolls for the first three days, Dec 27-29, to 148 killed and 1,362 injured, according to the Interior Ministry's Disaster Relief and Mitigation Department.
Nakhon Pathom is the province with the highest number of death, 11. Chiang Mai is the province with the highest number of injured, 64.
The main causes of accidents are drunk driving and speeding.

Always best to keep off the roads over the Christmas and Sonkran. Lost a few friends on bikes and in cars over these periods. Home with a beer suits me.

Chiang Mai -

"Huay Kaew Road from Canal to doi Suthep is closed off to traffic as Doi Suthep can't handle any more traffic. All U-turns on Canal Road are closed. Canal Road is one giant traffic jam, apparently all the way up to Mae Rim if reports coming are true."

Its nice and quiet here in Mae Sot, I made a good decision in spending the holiday period here

"The number of drunk driving cases recorded throughout the country over the "seven dangerous days" of the New Year period is up 23% on the corresponding period of the previous year and most of them are first-time offenders, according to the Department of Probation.
Between Dec 28 and Jan 2, a total of 4,635 motorists had been arrested and convicted in court for driving under the influence of alcohol, up 23% from the previous year, which saw 3,768 reported cases, Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, the department's director-general, revealed on Monday.

Most of the convicted drunk drivers were first-time offenders aged between 30 and 38, Mrs Ruenvadee said.
Of those sent to Bangkok North Municipal Court for sentencing, less than 1% were second-time offenders.
She attributed the increase of cases to authorities' stricter enforcement of drunk-driving laws.
Drunk driving offenders who are ordered by the court to be placed under the supervision of probation officers are required to report to authorities four times a year and do social service work for 12 hours.
Penalties for drunk driving were toughened last year. Offenders now face up to six months' imprisonment and/or fines of up to 60,000 baht. However, despite the harsher penalties, during the "seven dangerous days" over the New Year, a total of 365 people died in road accidents, up 8% from the year before, and alcohol was reported to be a factor in many of the deaths."
