Savannakhet immigration officials ordered to end border crossing fees

Looks like the immigration staff at this crossing have gone too far, many complaints have resulted in a stop to crossing payments, it is not clear if this means its a free crossing point or not.

This is good news, if enforced. In my experience Savannakhet is hardly the worst crossing. Smaller crossings like Phu Do charge whatever they like. Last time with a group of 4 people traveling by car, we got hit up for 700 Baht crossing at 11.30am. At the very minimum, I always expect to pay at least 300-400 at any Lao crossing, out of which 200 Baht (50,000 Kip) is for the green temporary import docs. Leaving is OK though - sometimes they charge 25,000 Kip (just over 100 Baht) but usually nothing at all.

I don't use this crossing anymore. Last time I had to pay private pick up driver 500 baht(he started at 1000 baht)to take me across the bridge.
