I previously mentioned this recently Sanpatong & Hang Dong By-Pass although I have been following the development of the 116 from Lamphun for a couple of years already.

My fascination for connecting one road with another today got the better of me, I finally joined up the construction of the 116 extension from Lamphun through to the 3035 (Chiang Mai Canal Road) which will provide a by-pass of Sanpatong & Hang Dong and making the Canal Road a major route in & out of Chiang Mai.

You can see the route here...

Nice one Ally.
I guess you'll be the first to get that new road onto your GPS!

re flags
We have black ones flying out here but I've yet to be able to discover why.

Lots of little treasures 'tucked away' aren't there?
Just a matter of taking the time and effort to discover them.

Bumble Bee looks nice.

(PS your 'roundabout' photo now has me thinking of a 'roundabouts' thread!)

They already have the red and white posts all the way along canal road from the intersection of 1296 and canal road back to SP, I guess that's where they will be appropriating the land.

So all those quiet little spots on canal road are gonna have a dual carriageway and heavy traffic coming there way in the future. Glad we decided not to buy land there after all.

HD and Sanpatong do need a bypass, but canal road is gonna be a nightmare as it approaches the university area, and trying to get to the main arteries to the North from there.

Kinda think the opposite.. Better faster rd.. Improved city access.. Bound to add a few services and things lacking..

As long as your not direct on the rd frontage it's probably upside to me.

I always dread riding south to hot because of that Sanpatong grid lock.... it will save so much time...

Bit of an update on the road building.

The new road construction is now visible at the bottom of the canal road. Earth movers and diggers are busy breaking through to the canal road.

Won't be long now.

Google Earth just updated its source and you can now clearly see the construction of the bypass.

Update on the road developments.

Photos taken near the 1013 UNDERPASS (shown in the 2nd photo) - yes this canal road extension will be a brilliant racetrack !

And this from the foot of the canal road looking south.

This is rather comical Phil, your map screenshot is not up to date! And it doesn't cover the entire run of the bypass down to the 108.

The google earth view posted last July (shown here again) clearly shows the construction.

Today, there is less dust & more tarmac.

Thanks for offering a different view though.

Phil, I have to ask this, what is the purpose of your posting a map ?

Apart from hijacking a perfectly simple & informative post, you are introducing screenshots of whats not on any map yet.

If you wish to highlight the inadequacies of one providers map product over another, can I suggest you start your own thread & keep it focused, rather than spoiling this one.

Thanks

They are still messing with the 1013 junction as well as down at the 108.

Was going to ask that of Ally too !
And also since Ally rode the new Hwy 1414, (that connects the 107 with the 1001) I used that report to update OSM, but left the bridges as still showing as under construction ... any confirmation of that being fully open wud be appreciated.

Sure will, I will take a look at the 1414 again too, as I am up that way this week with the bird too ;)

That was pretty much done a few months ago with only an unfinished section about 5m wide near an intersection closer to the 1001.

Would hate to be riding through at night and not know about that part as the rest of that road is fairly comfortable at 80k's or more.....except for the unfinished 5m.

Tried to get the middle bridge into the video but my range would not allow it. But motorbikes & small diahatsu micra's do actually go end to end now.

The length of the Sanpatong by-pass has now been used for over 3 years but parts of the road are coned off to prevent regular traffic using certain connections to the road.

The previous 2 lane canal road from its junction with the 121 / 1269 down to this new extension is now being made into a full 2 lane either side of the canal.

In December 2016 I captured the fabulous artwork murals on the Mae Wang Underpass on the 3035 / 1013 junction.

Hope you like the artwork ;)
