Road Riding Loops Out Of Chiang Mai


CNX (Chiang Mai) - 1001 - 1150 - 118 - 109 - 107 - CNX

Distance: 376km

One of the nicest loops out of Chiang Mai, if you leave early this can be done in a day no problem.






A couple of variations on this loop are:


1. Add the Doi Ang Khang Loop ( west of Fang, one of the steepest paved roads in Thailand!). This will add 53 kms to your trip






2. Add the Wiang Haeng Loop (some of this road is unmade but isnt too bad, a Versys should be fine) onto going up Doi Ang Khang, this variation alone is 209km

Distance: 593km


East of Pai on R 1095 is where there are slightly more switchbacks, watch out for the silver minibuses. Best done in 2-4 days the 1st time (not rushed).

Samoeng Loop - CNX - 121 - 107 - 1096 - 1269 - 108 - CNX

Distance: 90km

Easy 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hour day loop out of Chiang Mai with some great views from the Samoeng lookout.

Well, 100km is not enough for a day I assumed. The best should be aroumd 300-600 huh.

Chiang Mai - Nan loop - CNX - 118 - 120 - 1 - 1021 - 1148 - 1080 - 1091 - 1251 - 1021 - 1 - 120 - 118 - CNX


Distance : 662km


Can be done comfortably in 2 days.


The R 1148 is one of the best roads in SE Asia, due to its racetrack perfect curves, great surface & lack of traffic, a must if you visit Thailand on a motorcycle. The R 1091/ R 1251 loop back from Nan towards Chiang Mai are also great roads. When arriving in Nan, there are endless fantastic roads in the region, spending a few days in Nan poking around is highly advisable.
