Many and my perfect bike has 250cc.
Thank you for this. Sometimes I hate it, to get right.

i'm not really sure what happened there.
Its only one trail, right?
That trail has been on maps for a long time.
The army wont let you go down there.
But the other end, the sign is halfway down the track, its a very long way to turn round and go back.
Maybe its for a protected species of bird or something.
Does anyone know the real story here?

Don't know exactly where it is but I understand that it is a trail going south from the 1095 and this trail goes through the Mae Lao-Mae So Wildlife Preserve. That may also be the reason why they prefer not to have people on motorbikes disturb the peace in the area.

Seen this one about 3 weeks ago, on the way to Pai right? Just rode through as usual. They put those signs but they don't have much meaning I reckon.

Let me get this straight, you see this sign, clearly indicating motorcycles not allowed, you just ride on as usual, as you believe these signs don't have much meaning?
This sign is not the result of mapping, this sign is the result of thick skulled guys who think nature is meant to be damaged at their own discretion and for their own pleasure?!

If you accept and respect that at certain (sensitive nature?) areas there are restrictions you may achieve others will remain open.
If you ignore such restrictions you may find restrictions and enforcement everywhere!

Riding over the sign posted speed limit
Riding without a helmet
Riding a bike without a current tax disc
Riding while intoxicated
Riding a bike with a non standard exhaust
Overtaking on a yellow or double yellow line
Running a red light
etc etc

Not saying it's right or i partake in it.....but it happens here and some of the reason many people come here?
Thai's don't have much respect for the laws, especially signs.

Yes because Thais are so regimental about following rules..

Their country... when in rome etc..

So when everybody jumps in the Mekong you jump in the Mekong too, thinking it is a good idea??
Believe this is similar behavior as lemmings and sheep........

I have been brought up to respect rules that were set out, if it is prohibited to enter a certain area I will not go in there, never mind what the rest of the world is doing.
It is a mere excuse to point to all the others who disobey the rules and say it is all right for you to do the same.
Improve the world, start with yourself!

To be fair, I guess a sign showing a motorbike with a red line through it and the request "No Motorbike" can be quite ambiguous! ;)

Jumping in the Mekong is not illegal.

You've never gone over the posted speed limit a tad or driven or ridden over a unbroken yellow line in your life, not given way to the right at an intersection?

edit;i,ve not ridden where there was a sign like in the first post.

Often you will find tracks have been fenced or blocked off by someone, you have no idea who, or why, maybe a local wants to claim land illegally or stop people. Most expat riders dont read Thai so cannot tell if the sign is fake, like so much here. And who understands land access laws?
When you reach the sign, about an hour from Pai, if you turn around back to the main road,it'll take about 3hours to get to Pai, maybe a lot longer if its wet. If you do turn around there is no obvious other way to Pai, unless you know the tracks well
It has been the main dirt track to Pai on a popular map for many years

I was brought up to question everything, make my own moral choices, and not trust authority..

Each to their own.

For example I am probably breaking Thai work permit laws right now typing this post.. Simply because its a rule doesnt mean it makes sense or that I will obey it.

As you said, to each his own. Personally I do not enter into areas where there is a sign of "No Entry" or any other indication that you better do not go further but then again I have some experience in Laos where some guys along the road were yelling at me. Lo and behold, a few hundred meters further two guys jumped on the road and both pointed Kalashnikovs in my direction and told me in no uncertain terms that I could not go any further even though it was a public road. Guess, AlexUK has some experience with this as well as he was stopped in the same area a bit further to the north by the men in green and he was questioned extensively and was only allowed to go back after having been fined.

LivinLOS, so I go to your residence and see a 'No Trespassing' sign on the gate.
Because I've been taught to question, I ask myself 'Does that apply to me? Surely not!'
'I don't like the sense of authority implied in that message, so I'll enter anyway.'
'Can't be any harm in ignoring his sign.'
:deal
But, each to his own I guess.

Interesting discussion.

Sure.. The risk of enforcement is always part of the equation..

I often ride without a helmet, on the wrong side of the road, pass on the wrong side and probably break the law in several other ways I'm not aware of.

Often when caught I pay a fine, maybe officially with a receipt, maybe just a few bucks tea money to a friendly cop.

But that doesn't mean that I am totally insensitive to all laws.

In the case of the above sign I'd stop and think about the situation; if the trail runs through a wildlife preserve I try to show respect and turn around if it's not too much of a hassle.

It's Thailand and not Laos, I wouldn't do it in Laos but in Thailand you get away with it.
If locals use it with their scooters I use it. No reason I can't, nature preservation would be the last possible reason and a joke.
