Go riding on a big enduro bike on your own, on unmapped steep single track & you're rolling the dice a bit. Doesnt take much, going down something steep and you have to turn around and cant get back up the loose rocky, rooty steep and and you've got problems.

So Jim's KTM 690 got stuck up DST on a new exploring bit of single track. He tried to get it out on his own but ran out of energy and daylight, so he had to walk out and and leave it up there.

We talked about the best way to get to the bike and decided to take my Kawa KLX 220 & go 2-up to and get it down.

No rain, everywhere dry, should be ok.

The trail area is very near to Chiang Mai city, in fact you head to the trail just north of the Huay Kaew (R 1004 DST Rd) & Canal Rd / R 121 junction.

Being so close to Chiang Mai, you can be on the trails literally in 10 minutes and its sandy fun single track, here we're just leaving the concrete.

We could do 2 up 70% of the time, there are some rutted steep bits where one walked

Jim's not a GPS guy, likes to use the North Thailand GPS Map on his phone, so initially had some problems finding the trails he went up on to where the bike was.

Very steep and rocky here, camera always lies

He was saying "this doesnt look right", trails were disappearing

You can see from our tracks that we did explore every option until we got it right. There's a great sandy practice area similar to the one behind 700 Year Stadium. Easy to get too as the one behind the stadium is virtually shut off now.

Its marked on both maps here

Headed in the right direction, bloody steep with no trail, like the stuff to the east of Mae Jo. Jim off to see if there's a way through

In the distance behind, you can see the convention center on R 121/ Canal Rd.

Going back down this isnt going to be much fun either

Back down around the fun practice area, Chiang Mai city in the background

...More to come

What I didnt finish yesterday, was we didnt get to the bike or get the bike out, it spent 3 nights up Doi Suthep alone. The trail west of 700 yr stadium is the quickest way to the bike, but a steep hiking trail. Paul kindly offered to go help on his trails bike and could easily get up this trail with Jim walking.

They get there, Jim not looking too happy
