I am planning on renting a Honda XR250 in Chiang Mai next week (last minute trip). Would be great to ride into Myanmar for a bit, then into Laos.

Anyone know if a non-owner owned bike is permitted into these 2 countries from Thailand?

Thanks in advance and I apologize for this question being my first post here :)

I you rent from a reputable company like Lan @ C&P Rental in Chiang Mai he will give you all the paperwork to cross into Laos ( Chiang Khong recommended at the moment ) as for Myanmar it is not possible without a visa in advance, plus you will need a guide to escort you on the ride.

Hey Motion I'm also planning a little holiday next week in Chiang Mai but I'm going to ride the Mae Hong son loop and some of the golden triangle... Enjoy your trip it looks nice 30c+ weather at the moment.

Thank you! I can get an eVisa on the Myanmar gov website this week. Do you know of a guide that does this? Just one day of riding would be OK. I would like to enter Myanmar atTachileik.

I am assuming you are already in Thailand, the process of crossing Tachileik is relatively easy although at one time you could ride freely within the district without a problem. these day's regulations have changed and you will need a guide and a government official to accompany them whilst you travel which will make it costly. You mentioned earlier about heading to Laos, even if you did manage to enter Myanmar you cannot at this moment in time cross directly into Laos.

If you look at some earlier threads of the Tachileik bike week If i recall i added some contact info there.

My understanding is that in earlier days, it was possible to drive a Thai car (motorcycle not sure) as far as Mongla on the Chinese border without advance permission and without needing a guide. There were various checkpoints you had to stop at but there was no need to make any pre-arrangements as such - all the paperwork could be arranged within the country. This all changed some time ago and now you are restricted to driving/riding unescorted only in and around Tachilek. Only Thai registrations are allowed across without an escort and then only in the vicinity of the border.
