Lots of news all of the internet media says it happened yesterday?

A cyclist on a round the world trip was killed and his wife and two-year-old son injured on Saturday afternoon after a pickup crashed into them on Mittraphap Road near Korat.

yes, yesterday, and from what I can tell it happened just south of Muang Phon, roughly halfway between KK and Korat. Big highway, big shoulders, no idea how or why.

250,000 KM, a person would be proud doing that on a motorcycle, quite an accomplishment on a bicycle. Condolences to wife and child, they are in a tough spot having to deal with all this in a foreign country.

Well done Phil for not including the other photo from the series in the OP !!

Tragedy and child involved etc.. With such a global experienced rider you cant say he wasnt used to poor road conditions and drivers.. Just another case of poor road safety... And yes another round the world couple were killed a few years ago by a pickup driver who if memory serves, looked down for something. in the cab..

RIP. What a sad end to a great adventure. Prayers to the wife and child.

The accident happened when a pickup truck driven by 64-year-old Tiwarat Ratchaipidet hit the bicycle throwing Mr Villa into the side of the road killing him instantly.

And what's the penalty here for careless driving resulting in death and injury? Wish both wife and son a speedy recovery.

Driver Who Killed Around The World Cyclist Fined 7,500 Baht

The pickup driver who killed around the world cyclist Francisco Villa back in February on a Korat road has been handed a 7,500 baht fine and given a 1 year jail term, suspended for 2 years.

Thai media are reporting that Mr Tiwarat Ratchaipidet, 64, was originally given a 15,000 baht fine together with a two year jail term back in March, however, this was reduced on May 8th as he pleaded guilty to the charge of reckless driving causing the death of another person.

Mr Ratchaipidet also offered to pay 100,000 baht compensation to the cyclists widow and son who also sustained minor injuries during the accident.

Chilean Francisco Villa had set off on his world recording breaking bike trip in 2010 with the target of cycling 250,000Km over 5 years. His dream came to a tragic end on the deadly roads of Thailand on Saturday 21st February.
He was later buried at Wat Pa Dharma Uttayarn in Khon Kaen.

Appears let off's being the order of the day looking at the headlines of the young girl V's minibus tragedy in BKK now reaching a curious conclusion.
