Day 1 - Chiang Mai to Loei, "attempted" via the Sirikit Dam ferry.


Completely dry, no rain at all, we were having a fast ride south east. West & Da, 2-up on the Multistrada, amazing how that bike doesn't even seem to notice the second rider, it still handles and drives superbly. We get down to the Sirikit Dam ferry and the water is too low, no amount of persuading will get the ferry captain to budge, he's not taking us across, this is now a big problem.

We both immediately knew this was a disaster as it's a long, long way out of there to get around the Sirikiit Resevoir. Your choices are to go east towards the Laos border and south on the slow, twisty mountain roads or to head north to Wiang Sa, pick up the northern end of R 101, then head SW towards Uttaradit and pick up R 11 to get south east towards Loei, either way, it's a huge amount of Km's. West did the math and said "you won't reach Leoi now 'till 10pm, we're staying in Phrae". I decided what the hell and would push on to Loei, the Hypermotard has good lights!


So this is what was ridden, it seemed to go on for ever







& he was right, smack on 10pm arrived in Loei. Just looked at the GPS - 857km, with loads in the dark

The next day, 80km west to Dan Sai for the 2014 Phi Ta Khon ghost/ mask festival.
