Road No. 5 from Anouvong district to Longchaeng district in Xaysomboun province now has 40 percent of its 40 kilometres complete after work began in February last year.
Last week Deputy Governor of Xaysomboun province, Mr Phoikham Houngbounyuang and Director of Xaysomboun Public Works and Transport Department, Mr Xaysomphan Litengbrearjeu along with officials from related sectors observed progress on the project.
Construction of the road began in February 2014, with a length of 40 kilometres and width of 6 metres, starting from Yon River Bridge in Anouvong district to Longchaeng village, Longchaeng district, Xaysomboun province which is expected to be complete at the end of this year.
Anouvong-Longchaeng road is one of the priority construction projects under Xaysomboun's infrastructure development plan.
Xaysom boun authorities have been monitoring the progress of the project closely and when finished the road will cut travel times for people heading from Vientiane through Phaxay district to Xieng Khuang province. It will be quicker than travelling through Thasy village, Borikhan district, Borikhamxay province via Road No. 1D and Thathome district, Xaysomboun province saving up to three hours or 300 kilometres.
The road will also contribute to the province's plans of becoming a transport hub, linking to surrounding provinces and the national capital by 2020. The proposed linkages will facilitate movement between Xayso mboun and Vientiane, and the provinces of Vientiane, Xieng Khuang, Luang Prabang and Borikhamxay.
Xaysomboun province was established on December 13, 2013 as the 18th province of Laos. Located in the central part of the country, the province has committed to ensuring that by the end of this year all districts and villages will have proper year round road access to benefit local people and tourists.
