The route 1091, 1188, 1228, Offroad, 1082, 1148, 1080
Total distance 266 km
Out along the 1091 about twenty Harleys came past heading out of town, each and every one of them waved or gave me the thumbs up
As I am nearing Chiang Muan I see this on the hilltop, perhaps its Wat Bo Bia on the 1251, something to checkout another day
I notice this to my right and stop for a look around
I ride to Pong then take a right onto the 1188
I take a right onto the 1228 and after 2.7 km at N19.08.296 E100.23.024 the surface turns to rough
The scenery is looking good though
The surface is a mix of rough, the occasional short piece of concrete and two more lengths of asphalt, I had planned on riding along here a short way then returning to ride the 1188 and marking the burst of asphalt but things got changed
As I was already a reasonable way along this road I decided to try to ride across the mountains to Ban Sop Khun
It looks like I just missed the ice cream man
I tell them I am riding to Ban Sop Khun and they look amazed, I should have guessed then what I was letting myself in for
I saw one of these signs yesterday on the offroad section of the 1172
Its stunning scenery, the going is very dusty in places and not helped by two lorries coming down the hill together choking me
As you can see its rough going in places
A rare piece of concrete right here
I am enjoying this ride a lot at the moment
A village up here
These people tell me its Ban Santisuk and I mark it at N19.02.825 E100.29.437
The ice cream man turns up
I am his only customer, 5 Baht for this cool refreshment
Theres a Home Stay here but a bumpy ride to get there
I ride out of the village and carry on along the track but then I notice that I am not following the track to Ban Sop Khun on the gps and carrying on along here will bring me out on the 1172
Back down to the stream and I realise I have to cross it
The surface is pretty much the same
The scenery remains just stunning
There is an arrow pointing to my right and I ride up to see whats there, this is at N19.02.900 E100.30.034
This is the inscription for those who read Thai
From here the going gets a lot harder
Periodically breaking out into the bright sunlight
And at other times its like this with a struggle to fit between the trees
I would have said that it will be hard going on a road bike but as I have been told that if a Phantom can do it then anything can, I wont, seriously though I think a 4WD would struggle.
The going is now painfully slow as its mainly first gear through ruts plus a section of a very rough rocky surface, even downhillis mainly in first with a closed throttle and gently applying both brakes as at times its a wet slippery surface
This picture just doesnt convey how steep it is, I am pleased that the end of this very tiring offroad bit is nearing its end as my legs and arms are aching
I am nearing civilisation and I hear voices in the distance but see nobody
Another torturous downhill section
Finally I see the first living person since Ban Santisuk
This guys bike is dirtier than mine
Another water crossing and I use the bridge
Ban Sop Khun, the sight I was beginning to think that I would never see
These two come hurtling up the hill laden with goods, I guess its an everyday occurence for them
Off they disappear
I reach asphalt at N19.05.765 E100.34.795 soaked in sweat and totally knackered
I have no more enthusiasm for photos now, its gone 16.00 hours and I ride straight home.
Todays trip was without doubt the toughest one for me yet on a bike that wasnt meant for this kind of work, but the Phantom shone through
Half a duck with orange sauce and rice at Tonys Place tonight, this is a special, it was delicious, filling and was only 205 Baht.
