Last night I rode out to the Nong Bua lakes at Doi Saket to join in the celebrations of Yi Peng (Loy Krathong).
The lakes are at 18.873, 99.150
But before then I had a look at their preparations.
Preparing a car park!
I arrived before the main action and secured my bike at a friend's house.
Note the dome in the background (more about that later)
After sunset the lakes came to life.
There was a very effective and polite police and voluntary services presence.
And plenty of places to dispose of rubbish.
This event is increasing in size annually and last night had a truly international flavour.
I hear that it is now part of the 'package tours' system.
As usual they had a fantastic array of delicious food available for sale.
Insects anyone?
My choice.
A friendly Chinese visitor and her little daughter dined with me, Mum signing her lantern before releasing it into the heavens.
Here is the dining and entertainment area.
Then a walk around the lake.
Lanterns for sale.
(I had read that releasing lanterns was to be banned this year but word didn't get out to Doi Saket thankfully.)
The challenge here is to project the lantern through the narrow hoop.
100 baht if successful.
Let there be fireworks!
The view from the other side.
So, all my senses having been over stimulated, I retreated to that big dome at Wat Phrathet Doi Saket;
the dome that houses a Buddha footprint ....
18.869 99.145
... where I got a view of Ground Central.
So that was a very enjoyable evening.
NB It is MUCH better to ride a bike to the venue.
