I had the innards of my stock muffler removed and am looking for sound dampening material.

Any recommendations on what material best to use, fiberglass, steel wool, what else is there?

I prefer material that doesn't burn up and blows out after a few thousand km.

Fifty views - maybe from riders who would like an answer to this question, too.

Is there nobody on this site who has some experience with repacking a motorcycle muffler?

:)

Mr Gwan and Home make and pack their own mufflers so might be worth a visit to see if they can supply you with something.

I've used stainless steel wool before as muffler packing. It worked pretty good.

I've used ss wool years ago, it works fine for a relatively short time, then burns and blows out.

Since it doesn't seem possible to buy any FMF 4 stroke muffler packing here in Thailand I decided to buy some from the US through eBay.

I am waiting for a response from the seller and will probably order some in the coming week.

If anybody is interested in buying some please PM me; the more the better, that'll keep the shipping costs down.

I've used those round stainless dishwashing things, about 6bt each at tescos, took 20-30 to fill it up.
They didnt disintegrate

How many miles have you ridden with the pot scrapers in the muffler?

I tried to fix an old Kerker muffler on my K100RS that way - didn't take a couple of months and the stuff was gone!

Well if anybody prefers heat resistant packing sold by a company that builds exhausts for over 35 years over steel wool from Tesco send me a PM. :)

I am sure they did! They even disintegrate when you use them to scrub dishes. All the vibration and the heat sure makes them brittle.

The shipment from the US arrived and I am a happy chappy.

Seems like the only way to get quality muffler packing in TH is to order from abroad.
