Mae Jo, Chiang Mai Sunday Motorcycle Market
If you're looking to do an extended, small engined motorcycle tour in SE Asia, it's worth considering buying a second hand motorcycle and selling it after your tour is finished, it could work out considerably cheaper than renting.
One of the best places to source a motorcycle for this purpose would be the Mae Jo Sunday motorcycle market, which is about 5km north of Chiang Mai, Thailand's old city.
About 90% of the bikes are scooters (100-140cc) but you also will find some unusual bike there too. A friend recently bought a Honda Transalp 400 here, which was a great buy.
It's quite easy to find, you need to get onto R11/ superhighway ring road around Chiang Mai & then take R 1001 north for about 3 km to the big Mcdonalds sign. 20 meters after the McDonalds sign take a left at the 7-11 and the bike market is 100 meters down the soi (side road).
Plenty to choose from
Some Chinese copies of a Kawasaki KSR for 35,800 bht
The Chinese Platinum brand copy of a Kawasaki Ninja 250 at the market
The Chinese Lifan 110 copy of a Yamaha scooter, this looks like a decent copy
A new version of a Chinese copy of a Honda Phantom 200 , new price around 60,000 bht
A nearly new 2011 Honda CBR 250R offered for 99,000 bht, new price for the ABS model is around 130,000 bht
There's also a section with second hand cars for sale ---this converted Suzuki jeep would be perfect for a Laos trail trip
