I need to test if the crankcases on my KDX are holding pressure.
The only way to do it is by pumping about 6-7psi of air into it and seeing if it holds or if it doesn`t work out where it`s losing it by spraying soapy water on the engine joins and look for bubbles..

Like this..

So i have most of the bits for pumping air into the intake made up from PVC and sealed with thread tape and silicone but no pump yet.A push bike hand pump or something similar would suffice.

I still need need a rubber plug for the exhaust.
An expansion plug like this would be preferable about 45mm in diameter..

Or even a 45mm rubber plug would probably work, which i`ve had no luck in finding around Chiang Mai so far.
I also could use another 18mm diameter piece of rubber too.

Also some sort of hand pump like in the vid with a gauge that doesn`t go anymore than about 15-20psi for better accuracy.

Anyone got any ideas on where to find these around Chiang Mai?

Try the Chinese market and places like that, bring some pictures of what you want and I am sure that in 30 minutes you will have found all the bits you need.

Thanks for the reply Hass.

When you say "the Chinese market" i`m not sure where you mean...unless it`s the markets near the flower markets a klm or so from the north east corner of the moat towards the river?

Sorry mate, I meant Charoen Muang Road on the west of Nawarat bridge, lots and lots of shops selling the most obscure things...

Re: Leak Down Test Kit for 2 Stroke...Need Some Bits and Pie

I seem to have found enough rubber plugs and some PVC piping to make it work BUT can`t find a small hand pump with a gauge on it.

Tried Tesco,Big C and the mountain bike place on Chiang Moi road with no luck.

Anyone got any ideas of where i might find a small hand pump something like in the pic above?

I have a shock pump with a schraeder valve but it goes up to 300psi so I don't think it will be much use to you
Alternately you could pick up a low pressure gauge somewhere and plumb it in so you can use a bicycle pump or even a half inflated tyre to maintain pressure

Re: Leak Down Test Kit for 2 Stroke...Need Some Bits and Pie

I found a low pressure gauge (0-15 psi) on E Bay but it will have to be joined in somehow when it arrives.

I`m thinking about getting a cheap foot or bike pump with a gauge which is not perfect but it will still tell me if the crankcases are holding the pressure or not and if not probably where it`s leaking.

I have the below if you want to borrow it. Gauge goes from 0-140psi (0-10bar). Has schrader valve and various other fittings.
I also have a small portable air compressor with a hand inflator with gauge if you need it.

Re: Leak Down Test Kit for 2 Stroke...Need Some Bits and Pie

Thanks John,i`ll let you know.

I`ve got to go and get some more PVC as i miscalculated the size of the manifold inlet :bash

Re: Leak Down Test Kit for 2 Stroke...Need Some Bits and Pie

Well the correct size inlet manifold gave me more options for the PVC elbow and a T piece with a blank threaded end that i should be able to drill and fit the low pressure gauge to when it arrives.

Here`s what i found at Global House for 130 baht. edit;i found the blank plugs at a car parts shop on Kaeo Nawarat road just east of the bridge @ 70 baht.

It`ll be put together with thread tape and silicone as it`s all threaded except for the exhaust plug,it will have to forced in and hopefully hold with 6-7 psi?

Just need someone with a vice and drill i can use to fit the Schrader valve to at the end of it.

With the gauge at about 500 baht total of 700 baht all up.

Re: Leak Down Test Kit for 2 Stroke...Need Some Bits and Pie

I managed to find a small medical type hand pump with a valve in CM for 100 baht.
It`s a better/safer way of metering a small amount of air into the cases as only 6 psi is needed.

Just waiting on my 0-15 psi gauge which will be tapped into the green plastic blank plug and it`s ready to use. I could probably have found a gauge somewhere in CM but i spent a couple of days hunting around in the heat for what i`ve got so i`ve had enough of it really 555

Any 2 stroke that has had a complete tear down should be tested this way before it`s slotted back into the bike...which didn`t happen with mine as Thai mechanics don`t seem to have any idea of this type of test....you live and learn :hmm

Re: Leak Down Test Kit for 2 Stroke...Need Some Bits and Pie

Where did you find that hand pump?? I have been looking for something like that for a little while.

Cheers,
Hasse

Sign up or use Phil's ship it to account..

Re: Leak Down Test Kit for 2 Stroke...Need Some Bits and Pie

Thanks for the map!!

Just out of interest the best advice i could get is that 2 stroke crankcases should be pumped to 6psi and hold at least 4psi after 10 mins.

I pumped mine to 6psi and it was at 5 1/2psi after more than 10 mins.
So it`s passed the test and wont be having the cases split.

Thanks to bigntall for bringing a plug over from the US for me.

Bike will be ready to go next week but doctor says the rider needs another 3 months :hmm
