It's has been suggested earlier that people do not get invited on rides unless you are in the clique, so i thought i would open up a short ride i plan taking on Monday the 18th of March up to Muang Sing and back maybe three nights and coming back Thursday the 21st midday (subject to ferry times). Likely doing the inland trail on the first day to Muang Sing and maybe a blast to Boten and return on the border trail as suggested maps below.

Any takers PM me, or whatever... :DD

Great idea. Could you please explain to someone even further outside the loop/clique what this route entails: your use of the word "trail" leads me to believe this would all be off road? I've never ridden Laos, don't know anything about the area/destination/route you depict so don't know if it's tarmac, dirt road or jungle trail. What sort of bike needed? (Not able to join myself this time: broken knee).
Cheers.

Just to provide some info on the road and distances - from the routes shown on the 2 map parts, some 25% (or about 120 km. out of the 480 km.) will be on paved roads and the remainder on dirt roads out of which some 10% consist of single trails.

This excludes the "quick blast to Boten" which would be completely on paved roads. Although the dirt roads are quite easy, a dirt bike with "knobby" tyres should be used in my opinion. For your info, I am not a bike rider but I have been on these dirt roads with my truck so know a little bit of what can be expected with regard to the conditions of the dirt roads/trails.

The clique you refer to Bob is not on this forum, its the other lot that are like that with an inner circle

Sorry for the late reply lads I'm in Kalasin thus week and little Internet.

I think as Auke and Pounce have already mentioned lots of info on thus section already available but a KLX or CRF would do the trick.

possibly interested tho i'd sooner up mekong and back via ban long to vieng poukha.
then maybe south along mekong as I'll be in laos a week or so

Hi Alex
Thanks for your reply, i really wanted to stick to the route i laid out because it was on my to do list on my last trip but never got round to it because of time constraints, maybe next time.

I understand, I havent been up that part of the mekong yet, but recommend ban long to vieng poukha. It's a lovely dirt road. Although I seem to remember lots of bulldust coming down the mountain to ban long, and havent been east of there

Hi
Thanks, just too late this year, only recently got bike reg and heading back to the UK today. Hope to do Laos when I return in the autumn.
Tim.

Thanks Alex, maybe i will try and fit that track into my schedule and miss out Boten.

Bob, the track Alex is talking about is in our report too, Day 11.
It is a nice run over the slippery mountain, you'll enjoy it.

Yeah thanks mate, looks like Boten is off i can do the border trail to Muang Sing day one, day two head south to Nalae and then day three from Nalae to Long and the last day Long to the ferry point job done, almost.

maybe we can join you
what day do you plan to go?

Stopping in CK sunday night the 17th of Feb, on the customs doorstep early doors Monday or i may head over this Friday and try and get all my paperwork in place beforehand.

Maybe this should be on a separate thread and maybe it would be an idea to have a "let's ride" thread?... but here's another one.

I'm flying into Siem Reap on April 20th, then heading towards Chiang Mai. Not sure which way... maybe via Thailand, maybe Laos.

Anyone interested in riding along?

We will start heading back up from Vientiane on the 27th in the morning, if you are planning similar. Cheers.
