Any of you guy's want to tweak your KLX as described in Marcelino's post on Kawasaki Forum KLX 250 ( 300 ) camshaft mod by Marcelino - Kawasaki Forums i have been a great guy in CR that mainly works on dirt bikes and has been around for some time, his work is very good and his prices are fair, don't expect quick service as you will likely need to leave the bike with him for a few days. He's carried out the mod work on mine and a pals bike so far and has all the paperwork in his shop if you want the work doing.

Name is Kong as close as i can translate

Tel 0812 891647 speaks reasonable english

Google Maps

The picture is before he moved in but it's still pink but brighter !!!!

Yep, claims of 4 hp which is a huge increase when you only had around 17 to start with i also had my butt hole made bigger which involved opening up the muffler, i didn't feel a thing ;)

Alex is maybe the best guy to give a long term verdict, he had the same work done a while ago in CNX.

I also did the Marcelino mod and I am thrilled.

I have a 2011 D-Tracker. When I first got the bike I was sorely disappointed in its lack of power. I switched the ECU for the Japanese ECU and put on a K&N performance air filter and things got somewhat better but still far from ideal.

As part of the Marcelino mod, the cams were retimed 10 degrees each, the intake cam being retarded 10 degrees and the exhaust cam being advanced 10 degrees. The way Marcelino achieves this is quite ingenious. At the same time I enlarged the exhaust muffler nozzle from 15mm to 25mm and took off the airbox cover.

There is an Automatic Compression Release pressed into the exhaust cam and I had that removed and not reinstalled. The bike actually starts better, i.e. more quickly, and so far no problems because of the lack of an ACR.

The results are thrilling. The improvement is most noticeable in the midrange from 4,500 rpm to 9,000 rpm where there is a very pronounced improvement. Really satisfying. More fun! The bike now goes like it should have all along. With the airbox cover off it makes more sound but that is a variable since the cover can be reinstalled easily, albeit at the cost of one or two horsepower.

I used the same mechanic as Bob and he is skilled and very fair with his pricing. Highly recommended but as Bob pointed out, he works at his own pace.

The stock D-Tracker comes with pathetic IRC tires. I switched to Pirelli Sport Demon tires. Better but still not wonderful. I am now using a Pirelli MT60 110/90/17 rear and a Pirelli MT60 CORSA 120/70/17 front. The rear is about 125mm wide as mounted and the front is about 105mm wide as mounted. Pretty happy with these so far.

Thanks for the up date and welcome aboard at last :DD

I am pleased with the Marcellino mod, I had it done a year or two ago
I would not consider reverting to the original cam set up on a 250.
Maybe there is not so much top end but this does not concern me as I am offroad mostly

The stock downpipe seems restrictive, I got one made with a larger bore pipe, and I'm sure it makes a difference. Also I got a local made silencer which saves a load of weight
I'd like to get a local made powerbomb, but I dont know whether the design is any good. Can anyone verify their designs?
How ctitical is the hole placing and size? Is it one size fits all, or are dtracker/klx/crf 250s all have the same rquirements for this?
I dont know anyone thai that can translate all this to the welders

Bike(s)Kawasaki Versys and D-Tracker, Ducati 996R, 984 Factory Race, 900SS, H-D Dyna Low Rider, KTM 950S, KTM 950, Bimota DB4, Suzuki SV 650

Wow!
That's quite a collection you have there dhw.

Id like to see the bimota db4.Have you got it in Thailand?

Nice find Alex, makes it easy for everyone to do, wonder why he never punched out the ACR.

just brought my recently purchased D-tracker to Kong shop in CR for cam mod , have to keep him busy , my old xr enduro there also waiting for new pistonset and camchain , riding more bicycle for now

Good news Ronny, have him take the mesh out of the backfire guard at the same time, he should still have all the paper work i left him at the shop ......

I had to get a new cams so got setup again, but mechanic left the KACR on.
So I find it a little slower to start, but hardly any different realistically.
I will get it altered in 3000km service if not before

New cams what you been up too Alex.

Had to get a new piston anyway, and the old head/cams got worn, I think someone once dropped it and the engine kept running, on its side, or something, so oil didnt get to the head, and the cams/head got scored.
This happened sometime ago, and has not caused more problems, but I was recommended new head and cams this time
Wish I'd kept the old 101 hot cam from my old klx now.

i have a dtracker 250 and it makes an incredibly annying loud ticking noise between 5000 and 6000 rpm. It happens when the bike has warmed up and is consistently there at that RPM range all day.

Please please can someone suggest a fix for this as its driving me mental. I thought it may somehow be related to the valves / camshaft which is why im posting here, but it could be anything.

I have checked and its not something silly like a loose clutch or brake lever or loose exhaust etc.

Also the sound does not occur when the bike is stationary even if i rev it to 5500RPM (it only occurs when the bike is moving and is for sure coming from somewhere in the engine)

cheers!

:your welcome:to Ride Asia, i previously owned a KLX with similar problems, although the engine does have a peculiar sewing machine sound even from new. I would be looking at the automatic timing chain adjuster as the culprit and renew the chain and the adjuster ( i went through two in 30K).

1. Where do u get this and is it easy to put it on? Or do need to take to a specialist?

^ best to take it to a Kawasaki dealer as it sounds like they've had plenty of practice doing the job.

OK cheers. Will do this week... I might even get a manual tensioner as this seems to be more reliable than the automatic one
