This photo posted by Alex in another post got me thinking...a lot! Did you see that for real Alex???
I assume its a King Cobra! now if one of these bites ye in the bum when your...., how long have ye got to live, and what's available in Chiang Mai anti-venom etc and is it readily available to take along with you?

ffs! right so where do you get the anti-venom from? do you carry any with you?

I'd think you'd need to get to Suan Dok/Maharaj Hospital (or some other major hospital) A&E ASAP, with you not driving, if possible. Preferably within 30 mins.

Obviously, you really, really don't want to get bitten. Apparently you should back away quietly but keep your face to it as much as you can. I wouldn't try and scare it off - I don't think mature king cobras give a shit.

Personally, I wouldn't be much concerned about trying to identify it or getting close-up pics. If a snake has not got out the way when it can feel and hear a big, noisy dirt bike coming, it must be on a mission.

King cobra - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

EDIT: Unless you know your snakes, you aren't going to be able to identify it well enough to know what antivenom to take (even if you do have a selection with you.) Maybe could try this:

' In Thailand, a concoction of alcohol and the ground root of turmeric is ingested, which has been clinically shown to create a strong resilience against the venom of the king cobra, and other snakes with neurotoxic venom.[SUP][32]'

[/SUP]
People say you should capture the snake and take it to the hospital with you for identification... I'd let some 'mate' have fun with that task, while you get yourself to the hospital fast and just tell them what it looked like.

I had a real close call with a 2.5 metre King Brown in Aus, many a long year ago. Scared the crap out of me. I climbed out of a swamp, wearing shorts and flip flops... and it was sunning itself on the ledge I climbed onto.... and it came straight at me. I slipped over, trying to get away... $5k of camera gear went flying. I scrambled backwards, using my arms as well... with the snake's head higher than me. It must have been a matter of inches between getting bitten and not.... but the snake went into the swamp where I'd climbed out. It was a half hour, uphill walk back to the lodge I was staying at. I wouldn't have made it. Far more venomous than a King Cobra btw. I read about 2 deaths from King Browns within the next month.

I hate friggin' snakes now..... and I was seeing 2 - 3 every day riding in some parts of Asia... including some big bastard King Cobras in Laos. Most of them were about 2,5 metres too... and fast buggers, aren't they? They'd zoom across the track just in front of you.

Is there a different anti venom for every snake?
and it has to be kept in the fridge?
I wouldnt want to give the wrong info...

I saw a big king cobra being handled at the antivenom snake farm - part of a hospital near Lumpini, BKK. Don't want to get any closer to one, thanks. Fk that.

Yeah.... it'll be different.

So how many different species are you likely to run into in Chiang Mai that can kill you within an hour? Ive never seen one whilst in the jungle, so Im thinking its very slim, however is the cobra the most common and if so wouldn't it be prudent to have the anti-venom for that? What happens you inject with the wrong anti-venom?

"anti-venom required within half an hour" I bet that would be some ride down Soi1 from the view point

Lots of them out my way dining on frogs.

According to a 2009 Thai Visa comment;

"All the major hospitals in CM have access to the antivenon."

But Suan Dok (aka Maharaj) seems to be the recommended destination for the emergency dash.

If a Cobra,Krate or Viper bit you on the ass,out in the jungle, you might as well kiss it goodbye.

Im pretty sure the one in the pic is a Python though...no problem with them they will just wrap around you.

Only time youll have a a problem with a cobra is when you tread on,run it over or scare/corner it somehow, they seem to be fairly easy going unlike the King Brown and Tiger snakes back in Oz.
I trod on a little Cobra once and it didnt even look around, just slithered away...although i saw a golf caddy tread on the tail of a 2m one that chased my golfing partner...scary.

Ive seen a heap of snakes in LOS but always around populated areas and only one huge Python out in the jungle.

Are you sure it's a python Lew? I'm no snake expert but have Pythons not got diamonds and shit on them?

Ive seen a couple of really big pythons here in LOS and the colouring/markings were just like that one and a really thick body and bloody long. Hard to tell for sure without seeing the head properly though, could be wrong.

In almost 27 years of riding around here in the jungle I had three encounters with king cobras, one was one my way to Pai and it was about 5m long I had enough distance from it and it was moving away in slow motion, second was in high grass I didn't see it, but Kiyo was behind me and saw the snake going after me just missing by some inches and another one was somewhere on Doi Pui, that one was only 2-3 meters. Compared to Indian King Cobras the Thai King Cobra seems to have a milder attitude and is by far not as aggressive as it's indian counterpart, at least I felt like that, if you stay cool, they stay cool. I am lucky that I never rolled over one, for sure they are there, but the vibration and loud noise of the motorcycle make them leave the place before you come near them at least I think so or hope so. For the anti venom is always the question if you can make it in time, if your on a enduro ride and you need to return quick, you might die before reaching the hospital

Loop. it really is not a python.
I ran over a few snakes, couldnt help it,and you dont always see them, but your mates do and tell you after

Head looks more like a King in that pic...dont have my good reading glasses with me :(

You ran one over a couple of weeks ago, what was that one?

I hope I never run into a King Cobra. Ive stopped reading wikipedia about that bad boy!

Not a python.. The triangular body and head.. Pythons are rounder, fatter..

Tho I dont think its king either, hard to tell.. Also from the angle hard to say but doesnt appear to have the hood. Could be a cobra, rat snake, dunno.

I'll go to a snakeshow in mae rim, to get a closer look.
Which one has the most variety?
And which is best show?

I went to one up past the X-centre on the left. Ive been to the one on the opposite side as well. If I remember the one on the left has a better show. I was shocked at the size of them.
I think the cobra doesn't have a hood unless its standing up and wanting a fight with ye. I would say that photo from Alex looks like the ones in the snake show when there chilled oot.

Here's a photo I took at the snake place on the left. Look at the size of it compared to the tyre!

Some good info on snakes and first aid here: First Aid after a snake bite
Note the info on the identification of the snake as it is important for the choice of serum.
Also note the warning on spitting cobra's!

On the same site is info on a DIY snake catcher, I made one myself and we have used it once:
http://www.siam-info.com/english/snake_catcher.html

Here is a link on the use of Curcuma as serum for cobra bites, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20487206
But I think I will prefer to go to hospital instead of a local medicine man.....

there are a couple of "herbal remedies"

"Still findings proved that a potential snake bite remedy lies in mango seed kernel. A study evaluating the ethanolic extract from seed kernels of Thai mango (Mangifera indica), found that it's as a potent snake bite treatment for Malayan pit viper and Thai cobra venoms in laboratory conditions."

another one I'm still itchy from..but thats another story

That snake is nt photo is NO python its definitely a King Cobra ,,, they dont attack if you stop and stand still they are actually timid and cautious snakes ,,,,

That snake is nt photo is NO python its definitely a King Cobra

I always thought Kings were scaley'er ?? Like larger scales ??

Maybe thats because the ones I have seen were captive and large examples..

heheh reminds me of the joke about the two riders & one gets bit on the butt by a cobra.
He waits while his pal races to town for anti venom.
The doctor tells him sorry we are all out but go make a small knife slice on it & suck out the poison quick
& he will be ok to make it here. If not he is dead for sure.

Pal races back & his waiting friend asks...What did the doc say?
His pal responds he said your going to die :)

That aside snakes scare the sh$t out of me as I am from a place that had none & never had
dealt with or even seen any before moving here. Since being here I have run over two ( they seemed unfazed when I looked in my mirror )
Also one right on Changklan road at night that must have been 8' long. My wife on the back screamed & said the head was right near
my ankle. I never saw it as I was merging in that spot at the end of Changklan where it goes under a bridge

A cobra? Are you sure?

But my friend told me it is only a ratsnake, same this

Listen what they talk "aloy aloy", yes they eat it.
