Huay Xai to Pakbeng, NW Laos
The road from Huay Xai to Pakbeng is about 134km (as per both sides of this tomb stone)
It is mostly hard packed sand which disperses rain water pretty effectively, with clay under. This is southbound at the Huay Xai end, with Thailand on the left over the Mekong river.
There are some beautiful views of the Mekong river
It's pretty much an all seasons road
As you approach Pakbeng about 30km out, there are some mountain switch backs but nothing too serious
A ridge line hill tribe villiage on the road SW to Pakbeng
There are plenty of places to stay in Pakbeng, try and be there before 4pm as thats when the long boats arrive from Huay Xai and the guest houses fill up quick. I've stayed several times at the Mon Sa Van GH (70,000 kip)
Backpackers getting off the longboats in Pakbeng
Long Boat
You either like Pakbeng or you dont. Its a stop-over town for tourists on long boats on their way to Luang Prabang.
Opposite the Mon Sa Van GH, the Hashan Indian restaurant does excellent food
This is the owner of the hashan Indian restaurant. He has an interesting story as his family was evacuated from Siagon in the Vietnam war to Pakbeng, he is the 2nd generation to own the restaurant
