We had friends visiting on their first Thailand trip, so we took them on an easy MC trip to the Golden Triangle. No great pictures, just a road update.
Day 1 - Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong - 118, 120, 1, 1202, 1126, 1128, 1020
We were luckier than most recent travelers - only 5 minutes of light drizzle while on the 120. The rest of the trip was dry. Roads are OK, but the road widening continues on the 1020 from Thoeng to Chiang Khong. Most of the work is being done on the sides of the existing road and bridges, and nothing worse that a few bumps.
Day 2 - Chiang Khong to Doi Mae Salong - 1129, 1290, unknown, 1, 1130, 1234
We tried the mountain route to Chiang Saen. That was a mistake. After getting to the top on badly potholed roads, the construction started and continued all the way into Chiang Saen. Almost all of this strtch is red clay, and we were happy that is was a dry day.
After Chiang Saen, the 1290 was fine. We took it to San Thanon, then turned left onto a small road that went down to Route 1 above Mae Chan. There is a small police station on the 1290 at the intersection. The rest of the way up to Doi Mae Salong was OK, just had to dodge the convoys of vans coming down.
Day 3 - Doi Mae Salong to Chiang Mai - 1234, 1089, 107, 1346, 1150, 1001
All of these in decent shape. There is one bridge being replaced on the 1346, with a 50 meter dirt detour.
The friends had a great trip, and will be back again.
