Well this was a very demoralizing day (well not really, as the "other" guy is one of the fastest road rider's in Chiang Mai). Our state-of-the-art, expensive, flashy, Ducati Hypermotards/ 110 HP/ 821 cc, were beaten back from Pai by a 12HP Honda Sonic with 450 Baht tires (& they are expensive tires for a Sonic).

Darryl's DRZ 400 was still being fixed, problems with his clutch/ rear brake single lever, so came on the 12HP Honda Sonic

So off we go & to our surprise, westwards towards Pai, which is mostly uphill, it wasn't too difficult to stay with him. He said he wasn't playing with us, we dont know if he was joking!

Problems with the Sonic on this road V's the Hypermotard's were:

- Horrible suspension, the bad sections of R 1095 made the Sonic jump badly and upset the balance back and fwd

- Fixed footpegs, so limited angle of lean

- a dinged rim making leaning the bike too much a hazard

Considering it was only 12HP, quite scary its pace. The tight sections with many curves, the quick flickerbility made it hard to stay with.

We all get to Pai at the same time, the "Burger Queen" restaurant has been getting some great reviews, so we give it a try.

Now for the downhill ride on R 1095 from Pai back to Chiang Mai - 135km.

As soon as we hit the downhill tight sections Darryl was gone on the 12HP Sonic. As far as we know, he holds the record for the Doi Suthep hill climb, to the second look out with a time of 6 minutes and 45 seconds.

Back down to Coffee Hill, he's already there with his jacket and helmet off, very embarrassing, was a great day out.

Here is my video of today:

Here is Darryl's 6:45 time up Doi Suthep on his DRZ:

I've only ridden with Daryl once and it was comical how much faster he was than everybody else.

Just a statement how big bikes wont make the fastest rider.. ;)

The tires on the Sonic looks like Dunlop Arrowmax. Good tires for the money in my opinion. 5.500 baht a set for DRZ400SM at Maxxis.

Its especially downhill sections.. You can almost hold him in sight on uphills, I mean hes still faster but its incremental.. But as soon as theres downhill cornering hes just gone in a couple of corners.

In the doi suthep video, how does he get that camera angle? It looks like a pillion is holding the camera!

The GoPro Hero 3+ is mounted on an aluminium bar that is attached to a pad on the back of the rider with a belt (with velcro closure) around the waist.
It's my 10 year old son in this photo.
