Four of us had a few free days, what better to run-in the new Ducati Hypermotard on a trip to Loei? There and back from Chiang Mai about 1,000km - perfect!!!

....More beautiful photo's to come (this bike is the best road bike i;ve ever ridden)

The fast flowing R 11 down to Utteradit

Then time to play in the 4 digit roads around the Loei area

So 2 x Honda CB 500 X's, a Honda CB 500 F & a Ducati Hypermotard 821 with 125km on it leave Chiang Mai for the Loei region

Even though I had to keep the power below 6,000 rpm while running in, the grunt from this thing is unreal

11114392763_a9dd7a2e60_b.jpg

256km on it now, feels like it's going to take forever to get the first 1,000km out of the way so i can feel what 12,000 rpm is like

The big Utteradit military/ police checkpoint on R 11 - first time i've EVER been stopped on a bike there (car yes) and they even wanted to check our bags, we think there might have been a drug traffic tip off and then they check everything.

looking forward to this. I'm planning a trip to Loei and beyond next week via Nan but haven't planned a route back yet

Nice new bike Phil. It's always amazing how much power Ducati can fit into bikes so small and nimble!

The new Hypermotard seems to be raising the bar. Nothing but rave reviews.

I'm shocked how good this machine is, I told Som "you're so lucky it can't cook".

The viewpoint at the Phu Hin Rongkla National Park on R 2331 is spectaular

Co-ords are:

Surprised how comfortable the stock seat is, 650km day and no real pain

A full day of riding, 650km with lots of twisties and into the King Hotel in Loei

600 Bht for the rooms downstairs, wifi & aircon

Note - to start the shower there's a push button on the shower unit, took a while to figure it out

There's another place in Loei for lodging that Bob & Gary have been using called MuanManee worth checking out, co-ords are:

Delicious dinner at Chris's Steakhouse in Loei

Pork steak in pepper sauce is outstanding

The boys said the pizza's were good

Even managed to hook up with Barry, one of the local riders from Loei. If you're in Loei try hook up with him, he's a very funny guy and knowledgeable about the area

No evening is complete in Loei without a midnight visit to Robot

great pics, brilliant RED bike and looks like the weather has been good as well. enjoy the HM to the fullest and Conti-TKC80's should fit as well... nuff" said....

Renovations at the King Hotel in Loei, the dodgy massage is now a coffee shop

Then time for some route planning. We wanted to see Chiang Khan on the Mekong River at the Laos border, its one of the last traditional style towns left in the area with wooden houses

11126226916_4b52f7378b_b.jpg

The old teak and timber houses in Chiang Khan are beautiful

11114984165_2c3a2b98ce_b.jpg

Fascinating to walk along the main street in Chiang Khan and look at all the old buildings and from their decay you can see the unusual construction methods

11115027234_0d2fa5eb6a_b.jpg

A multitude of coffee shops, restaurants and guest houses (all called homestays in Chiang Khan) litter the northern side of the main street as this backs onto the Mekong River over looking Xayabouri (Sayabouri) Province, Laos on the northern side of the Mekong River

Aim for around co-ords: N17.89608 E101.65642 & that seems to be the center of town

11114963955_c6bc839e3e_b.jpg

There's definitely a lot of effort to keep the town looking authentic, its really worth a visit

Looking north across the Mekong River in Chiang Khan at B. Takdet, Xayabouri, Laos, loads of long boats lined the shore

We were trying to figure out if they were associated with the wood products factory or something to do with Wat Takdad in the background, will ask Don.

They could be water taxi's to Vientiane?

From Chiang Khan, it was a good opportunity to check out R 2195 westwards that follows the Thai border/ Mekong River, westwards towards Tha Li (where there is an international border crossing into Laos). This road in the past had always been pot-holey and unmade so a good chance to check its condition.

11127611373_acc67537c6_o.jpg

It had deteriorated even more, some very nasty 5km bad pot hole sections and lots of gravel sections, if you're not on an adventure bike avoid it. The CB 500 X's were amazing on the gravel roads by the way.

There's a brand new concrete road off of R 2195 at N17.57216 E101.24885, we went up it a km or so, will be interesting to see where it goes.

Lot of history there at the now national Park. The story goes it was the last bastion of Thai communists and they had dug themselves into the hills and repelled the government forces. Proved a very popular group that was joined by a large contingent of Bangkok university students who were issued with a gun and uniform on arrival. The Thai army formed a special trained force to dislodge them and only an intervention by the King offering an amnesty on surrender did avoid widespread bloodshed.

Looks like I would have completely left out 2331 and the Viewpoint on my proposed route. What a Travesty that would have been. What's the best way from Loei to the start of the 2331 ? can't make it out too well on the Maps

From Loei head west along the 203-2013 towards Phu Ruea,Dan Sai and Nakhon Thai. A few k`s before Nakhon Thai hang a left onto the 2331. It`s nice ride right through to there too.

Thanks. so do the 2331 from west to east , hadn't thought of that. Then do a loop around on the 12 and head for Uttaradit and home maybe or east to west on the 2331 again :hmm

Lakota good that you can get some riding info for your trip, maybe we can look forward to your first ride report so other riders can benefit in your new Forma boots

Back on the good roads R 2013 is a fun ride, then onto R 12 which is undergoing road widening (this will be an awesome superbike road when finished)

From there a blast up R 11 back to Chiang Mai, 1,300km in 3 days the Hpermotard is now run-in, Ducati, Chiang Mai were pretty shocked when I dropped it in for an oil change.

Mate, very limited selection of DS / Offroad tyres available for the Ducati HM / MTS, your HM runs 180/55/17 rear wheel.
Got an order placed for my MTS = TKC80 set and a set of Conti Trail-Attack to try out, general riding 80/20 (onroad-offroad) I am very happy with the Pirelli Scorpion Trail tyres must say.

TA web-link: Continental Motorcycle Tyres*-*ContiTrailAttack
TKC80 web-link: Continental Motorcycle Tyres*-*TKC 80

Another option and soon available for the MTS rear wheel as well:

I'm given a couple days on the Hyperstrada from Ducati. Not taken it yet though. Seems to be an interesting proposition. Will wait for more reviews from you Phil.

Looking to change the exhaust
And with the full termig kit, you also get the mapping updated to include the "Race" mapping. Will pick up mine tomorrow if my flights don't get too messed up, already 2 1/2 hour delayed from Colombo now.

Just an update on the 2195.
I took it today, heading west from Chiang Khan on my GT1000 which is basically a sports tourer.
95% of it is in reasonable to good condition, and I notice some fairly new looking stretches of hotmix. The unmade sections are short and some appear ready for bitumen. Thoroughly enjoyed it !

Thats great news Bill, thanks for the update. Its a lovely run along the river there, was a shame about the road surface in the past.
