I'll have to talk to David Bailey & LR as they've both also done this a million times. The road directions east of Chiang Rai are very unfriendly when you are trying to head east towards Chiang Khong, a lot of weaving is needed whichever route you take.
This route below is around 290km, it can be done anywhere between 3 and a half and 4 and a half hours of moving time:
