Just had a couple of forum members report back to me crossing at Houay Xai is still not easy, they crossing in a party of TWO and still had to talk their way out being classed as a tour group and charged accordingly with a tour guide.

It's another case of on the day and the mood of the border point on the day so bring a big smile with you !!!!
 
I would like to cross alone into Laos at Chiang Khong and am willing to pay tour guide fee. Will this be possible, and what would be the cost? Also, I'd like to ride my Kawasaki KLX 150BF. Is there a possibility?
 
Unfortunately, you can't cross with a bike under 250cc, latest news tours fees are now applicable even for a solo rider, expect to pay around 2000 baht for that privilege.
 
Latest info as of today, forum member Justin crossed solo, no bridge escort fee and more importantly no bullshit about having to pay for a tour fee.

Of course it may all change tomorrow :LOL:
