I noticed on this website sometime ago Garmin GPS's for sale somewhere, really cheap and nasty ones that probably do a simple job of getting folk around the city in a car. I can't find the post for the life of me! also have looked in BigC and Tesco Lotus without much success. Please someone tell me where I can source one of these. I think they were around the 2K Baht mark?

Thanks

Jonny Eagle GPS in Chiang Mai (Panthip Plaza) has the Garmin Nuvi 1250 with ESRI V12 map already installed on sale for 3,900 bht

Noticed today Tesco Lotus has the wide screen Garmin Nuvi 40 GPS with the ESRI Thailand street map installed for 3,990 Bht, a great deal if you're using a road bike. If it Rains, just put a zip lock, clear plastic bag over it.

That is cheap as the 40 does the more advanced lane assist and junction view stuff that imported units cannot do with ESRI mapping.. The whole locked to Thai OS bullshit.

Yep - for a road bike here, that Nuvi 40 is a no brainer.

Yes cheap .... but will it survive motorbike-viberations, can you charge it in the bike and can you buy an holder to use it on your motorbike?

It took while but I just bought an Garmin Nuvi 40. Very cheap at only 3999thb incl. an car mounting and and car-charging-cable. As I had already and RAM motorbike mount I only had to buy and RAM-cradle (450thb) and and Garmin charging cable straight to the battery (1800thb). If you would buy it all together the all RAM-mounting and GPS device would costs you aboyt 8000thb.

The device comes with Thailand map (ESRI) and with 1 free update. The device can use memory cards so you can add extra maps. The touch-screen is glove friendly and I made an 2000km trip with it and it is still in 100% working order. Of course it is not water-proof, although I did forget it once to take off with a little bit rain.

The only con for me is that the device has no cradle-contacts so you have to unplug and USB cable every time you take it off your bike. There is one other model (2465?) that has this and it does cost 6500thb I believe but I could not get the cradle for it. O and I am missing that I can not export KML files from the track I did ride (at least I did not find out how).

One other problem is that my Macbook is not detecting the device as USB-device so I can not register it or update the map. The problem could be the Mac OS or the USB cable. ButI have only 1 USB-cable and only Mac OS in house so still have to find someone with an Windows machine to test that.

Until now I am happy with it, it helped me already a few times to find the way out of small villages.

Ivo,

Try different USB cables at this is often a problem. I know of cases where 2 different cables failed and third one did work alright. If this does not solve your problem you might try to install the latest USB drivers for the Nuvi as that is also one of the issues which people are running into when connecting the Garmin with a computer fails.
