Further up the 1013 past Mae Win, about 1.5 k past the turning toward Doi Inthanon, there are some stairs on the right. Just another Wat I thought, but I noticed a few tourist buses parked opposite and wondered what was of interest there. I asked some people coming down if it was worth the climb and they said yes so taking some deep breaths, up I went. Well, judge for yourselves, although my phone cam doesn't quite do it justice - I was actually surprised it showed any detail at all.

Climbing up further there was even more to surprise me. I realised the site was at the end of a ridge with views on three sides and it became obvious why this place seemingly in the middle of nowhere had been chosen.

Notice the monk 'chilling' in the little pagoda.

Even a large plain looking building had a surprisingly opulent interior.

And a slightly downmarket alternative.
