ADV Pulse has just posted an interesting collection of what they consider "essential" items for any camping trip, what do you think?

8 Motorcycle Camping Gear Essentials for Under $300 » ADV Pulse

I thought they put together a good set of gear. I think I'll grab one of those head torches... my current one, with 4xAA batteries is simply too big.

[h=2]1. Eureka Apex Solo Tent ($89.97)[/h]
Dimensions: 90 in. x 32 in. (228.6 cm. x 81.2 cm)
Packed Size: 5 in. x 16 in. (12.7 cm. x 40.6 cm.)
Weight: 4.2 lbs. (1.9 kg.)

You can save a lot of weight and bulk with your motorcycle camping gear by choosing a one person backpacking tent. A single person tent is all you really need to stay dry and comfortable if you are just going camping for shorter time periods and the weight savings will pay dividends out on the trail.

[h=2]2. TETON Sports TrailHead +20°F Sleeping Bag ($54.38)[/h]
Dimensions: 87 in. x 32 in. x 22 in. (221.0 cm. x 81.3 cm. x 55.8 cm.)
Packed Size: 14.5 in. x 6.5 in. (36.8 cm. x 16.5 cm.)
Weight: 2.9 lbs. (1.3 kg.)

Your typical sleeping bag is too big and heavy for motorcycle camping. A backpacking mummy bag that contours to the shape of your body minimizes weight and bulk. A bag rated at 20°F (-7°C) is sufficient enough to keep you warm in most climates, as long as you aren’t camping in cold winter environments.

[h=2]3. Princeton Tec Byte Headlamp ($19.10)[/h]
Battery Life: 96 hours on low
Battery Type: 2 AAA batteries
Weight: 2.25 oz. (64 g.)

When the sun goes down, you are going to need some light around the campsite. A headlamp is great for keeping your hands free while you collect firewood, wash dishes, or read a book. If you aren’t going for a long night hike or trail run, you won’t need an extra bright light. More powerful headlamps are heavier and can become uncomfortable on your head as well.

[h=2]4. Etekcity Portable Backpacking Stove ($9.99)[/h]
Heat Output: 6.7 BTU
Packed Size: 3 in. x 2.5 in. x 1.5 in. (7.6 cm. x 6.4 cm. x 3.8 cm.)
Weight: 4.8 oz. (136.1 g.)

If you are motorcycle camping in mild weather most of the time, a high-end stove may be more than you really need. You can get by with a simple stove, if you don’t mind waiting a few minutes longer for water to boil.

[h=2]5. MSR Dromedary 4 Liter Bag ($30.41)[/h]
Volume 1 Gallon (4 Liter)
Dimensions: 19 in. x 10 in. (48.2 cm. x 25.4 cm.)
Weight Full: 8.5 lbs. (3.9 kg.)
Weight Empty: 7 oz. (198.4 g)

Many remote camp sites don’t have a source of water. It’s important to have plenty of water for cooking, drinking and washing up. You can’t rely on your hydration pack to provide sufficient water for camping after a long day of riding. You need another container for carrying extra water. The advantage of using a bag over a hard container for carrying water, is that you can roll it up and tuck it away when it’s empty.

[h=2]6. Therm-A-Rest Trail Scout Sleeping Pad ($29.98)[/h]
Dimensions: 47 in. x 20 in. x 1.25 in. (119.4 cm. x 50.8 cm. x 3.2 cm.)
Packed Size: 4.6 in. x 11 in. (11.7 cm. x 27.9 cm.)
Weight: 14 oz. (397 g.)
R-Value Insulation Rating: 3.4

A good sleeping pad is important for getting a comfortable night’s rest. Sleeping pads give you a soft surface to sleep on and keep you insulated from the cold ground. Inflatable backpacking pads with a contoured shape provide the best balance of weight and comfort.

[h=2]7. GSI Outdoors Pinnacle Soloist Cookset ($44.95)[/h]
Pot Volume: 0.3 Gallons (1.1 Liter)
Packed Size: 5.5 in. x 5 in. (14.0 cm. x 12.7 cm.)
Weight: 10.9 oz. (309 g.)

Many motorcycle campers want a versatile cookset that will allow them to prepare different types of food. A light-weight, compact backpacking cookset is ideal for motorcycle camping, as long as you are not cooking for several people.

[h=2]8. Sanrenmu Multifunction Pocket Knife ($16.95)[/h]
Folded Length: 3.8 in. long (96 mm.)
Blade Length: 2.8 in. long. (70 mm.)
Weight: 3.3 oz. (93 g.)

A good knife is a handy tool to have while camping. It’s a versatile tool that can be used for many things like cutting food, hammering in stakes and preparing tinder for the fire. If you are just doing basic motorcycle camping, you don’t need a giant hunting knife. Just a small simple knife will do. Something that you can keep handy in your pocket for work around the campsite.
