Today I was talking with Khun Lan at C&P Rentals about renting a CRF for a friend to ride through Laos.
Khun Lan asked what spares I was carrying on my own CRF and offered to supply such items as clutch cables, levers etc.
Then, to my alarm, he asked if I was aware that some CRFs are suffering from failing automatic cam-chain tensioners!
I was aware of the clutch failure on some local CRFs but this was news to me.

He went out the back and returned with a new tensioner and proceeded to give me a demonstration on how to replace
the original one when (not if!) it fails! He will supply us with a spare.
I said we'd only be travelling at about 90kph and the bikes have less than 2000 kms on them.
"Doesn't matter what speed, what distance."
Not very reassuring to hear about this issue.

He described the metallic noise the item makes when it fails and said it would need immediate replacement.

Ahhh, the olde XL series Hondas with they manually adjustable cam-chain tensioners. Sometimes progress is not progress I guess.

So I know Honda are aware of the clutch issues (and the 2 week wait for parts) and I now wonder if they are aware of the tensioner problem
and, most importantly, what they plan on doing about it. :RE

how do you know that honda are aware of clutch issues ,its only 2 people that have had to change their clutch,i dont see anyone else on other forums having clutch issues yet.
is it lan that has the engines mods done on his bike would be interested to know if it was a modified or bog standard bike that had these problems.

I know Honda are aware because they have so far taken 2 weeks to repair one of the bikes.

forked seals on retard

had the left (compression) fork leak the other day and the right (dampening) is weeping too. bike less than 4 months and only 8000 k's on clock.
note to self - do not EVER get bike pressure washed again.
Honda want to take 2 weeks to replace both forks - not replace seals.

Can a pressure was damage seals?
My R/H fork started leaking badly after a bouncy trip to Laos and Honda also replaced both fork legs. Perhaps there is a weakness they know about. I was surprised when they eventually came out from behind the counter with two huge boxes and thought 'Surely not...'
