Three revolutionary caves in Vienxay district, Huaphan province have now been made available to the general public to rent out for the purpose of organising meetings, workshops and seminars.

The caves, which formerly harboured the revolutionary leaders of the Pathet Lao during the struggle for independence during the 1960s and 70s, can now be hired by organisations or groups, offering a unique setting in which to hold a workshop or seminar. Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Phouvanh Phetmixay, told Vientiane Times on Wednesday that the former caves are the commerce cave, performance cave and planning cave. During the struggle for liberation in the 1960s and 70s, the commerce cave was used for producing food and other goods, the performance cave was for organising Lao songs and traditional dances while the planning cave was a place for the authorities to discuss the plans for liberation.

“These halls inside these caves which we have opened for the general public for meetings, workshops and seminars can accommodate between 100 to 300 people,” Mr Phouvanh said. The rental price is in accordance with the size of the respective caves so the performance cave, being the largest, is rented at 500,000 kip per day, the medium sized planning cave at 300,000 kip per day and the somewhat smaller commerce cave at 170,000 kip. There are about 500 caves in Viengxay district. So far, more than 10 caves have been developed as tourism sites to encourage more domestic and overseas visitors to explore the area.
